Anyone had a child sedated for dental work?

My six year old son is due to have treatment with sedation on Monday. They are not allowed to eat six hours before treatment. Has anyone had experience of this and how long to they take to recover? I am very nervous!

I haven't had a child of mine sedated, but have worked on plenty.

You say sedation, do you mean where they are just kind of sleepy, don't care sedation or do you mean full general?

Either way, children tend to come round fairly quickly and easily. They will still need to take it easy for the day, not too much running around etc. as he won't be that steady on his feet for a while. He may sleep more too. This is fine.

We say that adults should have another adult with them for 24 hours, so by that time he will be fully recovered.

Of course you are nervous, but I am sure he will be in good hands! Just adhere to the post op instructions & he'll be right!

Thanks differentnameforthis - do you work in a dental practice. I have been just told that he will be given gas to make him drowsy. I actually called the practice just now and they were so rude! The receptionist just said 'did you not read the letter we sent you??'

They sent me something about six weeks ago and to be honest I had forgotten. They were just so unhelpful!!!

My Dsis had loads of teeth taken out under sedation about three years ago when she was 11/12.

She recovered really well. She had to stay at the clinic for about an hour ( I think) afterwards. I did go and collect her and my mum as although she could walk,she was fairly zonked and would not have managed public transport well.

She just spent the rest of the day on the sofa milking it for all it was worth but was fine the next day.

What kind of work is he having done? Please do find what the surgery sent you and follow it to the letter as it's for his own safety.

I was with my DS when he had a general (for an extraction) earlier this year. He sat up and got a bit feisty when he had the gas (mind you, so did I when I had him! ) but otherwise went under well.
He was very quiet for the taxi home but seemed to have made a full recovery by the time he got back We made a bed up for him on the sofa anyway.

I used to, pre dc! I am so sorry they were rude, it isn't only dr's receptionists that can be rude!

If you are unsure as to speak to the dentist or his assistant.

Gas is fairly quick to come out of the system, tbh. But again, he will be unsteady for a while & may just want lots of sleep that day!

dd had crowns done under general when she was 5.5, poor love (weak enamel between teeth and we hadn't thought to floss such a young child).

She was woozy for a few hours, and pale, but otherwise fine - apart from throwing up down my back when I picked her up to carry her out to the car! They said someone should be in back of car with her on way home for this reason - some kids get sick afterwards. Absolutely fine by that evening, and at school the next day.

How horrid that they were rude at the dental practice, feel for you.
