DD Banged head and then went blue

DD who is 20 months old banged her head quite badly on laminate floring whilst running around. I immediately picked her up and she didn't cry for what seemed like 30 seconds she had a very pained look on her face and started to go blue, before finally taking a massive gulp of air and crying. Afterwards she was holding her head and was sleepy, but perked up after about 15 minutes. I think she is okay now as she has been smiling etc but, is it normal to hold breath and then go blue, is it shock? DD has done this before but not for so long, should i be worried?

However, with a head banging incident, I tend to take to A&E to be checked over - they are usually pretty quick

I'm normally shockingly laid back when it comes to seeking medical help for my dd, but I must say I think you should get her checked over in A&E.

my ds used to do this although he was a bit older the first time. I thought he was holding his breath and fainting as a result. I ended up taking him to gp who said no, not breath holding but s'thing else, can't quite remember the name now, like anoxic hypoxia....he explained nervous system is overwhelmed and 'switches off' to protect itself. Sorry I haven't explained that v well, was a long time ago now. Anyway, he said was nothing to worry about but be aware of incase he fainted somewhere dangerous like near water. Didn't happen very often, 1-2 a year, and as he got older would be for emotional reasons - like being outraged when friend cheated at a game!
I would go to gp anyway for your own reassurance as I know it can be v scary.

Sounds like she winded herself badly when she clonked her head. Watch out for vomiting, poor responsiveness, unusual crying or groaning and sleepiness. But if she is okay in herself just keep an eye on her for 24 hours.

Both of my boys are breath holders when they get hurt or a fright.
It's a nightmare. Best to get it checked out though by a GP.

They hold their breath until they start to faint, so i don't know whether they are passing out because of the bang on the head or because they forgot to breathe.

sounds like blue or white breatholding, but if happens a lot, you might want her to get checked out for Reflex Anoxic Seizure...look for the starrs website for info....

my oldest did it a few times, and my youngest did it a lot...at one point he passed out completely several times wihtin one hour....whihc was terrifying and I took him to A&E where he did it again...but it was just breatholding and he outgrew it...
there is a theory that a sensitive, underdeveloped nervous system may play part in this...

This morning DD seems fine, am going to see Gp and speak to him about it. Seems like breath holding is quite common.

My DS2 who is 9mo does this. I saw the HV and it is very common. I was told that breathing on his face quickly will make him start breathing again and it always does.

She definitely neds checking out.

When my 2 year old fell and banged his head, as soon as I mentioned he was blue they said I had to take him straight into A&E.
