3 week old has a stinking cold

ds2 is 3 weeks old and thanks to his big brother starting school has had a cold since yesterday
hes got a snotty runny nose and a bit of a cough but i think the cough is due to mocus/phlem and hes getting bad wind too
hes breastfed iv just given him a bath in a steamy bathroom is there anything else i can do for him? r anything i should look out for?

have you tried snuggle babe, its like vicks vapour rub but for babies (not sure how old they have to be)

i went to boots today and he cant have anything

Only thing I would do is keep an eye on his temperature - and if you think he is getting hot then call NHS direct. Absolutely don't want to worry you - DS had a couple of colds and was absolutely fine, but DD had a cold that became a nasty virus and we ended up in hospital. She was fine but it was quite frightening and until then I didn't realise that even a cold/virus can be difficult for tiny babies. They always want to see a newborn with a temp. Breastfeeding really helps to moderate temperature too though.

I'm in exactly the same position - my 3 week old is snuffly and finding it hard to breathe through his nose. The past 2 nights have been a nightmare!

I have got some saline drops which you put up the nose and which thin the mucus making it easier to remove. I also got an aspirator from the chemist to help remove the mucus.

I asked about Karvol in the chemist but that too is for 3 months and older, however, there was another brand of decongestant which I bought which was suitable from birth which I have added to some hot water in his room.

Finally, try raising the head of the moses basket when he sleeps. Good luck - it's horrible when they're ill so young.

Awaywiththefairies - hope he had a better night - ds woke every 2 hours and the only way he'd sleep was next to me in bed propped up on a pillow.

We had this with DD - took her to the GP when she was only about 10 days old. She didn't have a cough but she was really snotty. The only thing they said she could have was the saline drops, which we got on prescription. Since then we've seen them in Tesco (called Nasosal or similar). They really did seem to help.

They also said she'd take longer to feed (also breastfed), which depressed me no end. The good thing is that they can get over it reasonably quickly because you help with their immunity.

well i took him to the gp his chest is fine and hes fine got some saline drops detox i spent the night sleeping sitting up with ds sleeping on my chest it seems to help hope you get a better night tonight
