Oral Thrush Advice

My dd is 6 days old today. We started on the breast feeding very well - every 3 hours, wind, sleep repeat. Last night I was feeding constantly for 2.5 hours and she was crying a lot, obviously uncomfortable.

Today she has fed erratically but an awful lot - every 3 hours with top ups in between. We noticed a hard yellow mark on the top of her mouth. My mil is a nurse and she pointed out that it was probably thrush.

We took her to a doctor but he wasn't entirely convinced as it is yellow, on the roof of her mouth and there was no other white marks or anything. He did decide to give us a prescription for daktarin but said if it doesn't clear up soon to take her back.

Does anyone know if it could be anything else. The mark is yellow, right towards the back of the roof of her mouth and it won't wipe off. Has anyone seen this with thrush before, as she is only 6 days it could still be early thrush. Thanks.

Her feeding routine is completely normal for 6 days old. Now that your milk has been 'in' for 2-3 days, she needs to boost the supply. Although she appears to be feeding erratically, what she is actually doing is boosting your supply to meet her growing needs. The frequent night feeding is common when babies need to boost the milk supply, as your body is at rest and the hormones can be at their most active to produce more milk.

If she is very windy, try winding before, during (a couple of times) and after each feed.

Any ideas about the yellow mark then, it looks like a fungal thing

Look inside your baby's mouth when he is crying. Your baby may have small white bumps on his gums. These bumps are usually (normal) cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs and will soon go away on their own. Yellow-white spots may be present on the roof of your baby's mouth. These spots are known as "Epstein's pearls" and will also go away without special care.

If you google Epsteins Pearls it comes up with a long list of resources - most of which say the mark resolves by itself within 1-2 weeks without any treatment.

Deedle thrush normally looks like white curds in the mouth. If this is in the roof of the mouth and yellow it is probably just a fatty lump. Get it checked but i am sure its nothing to worry about

my 7 week old has a very white tongue is this thrush???

get it checked with doc ..might be,does it look like you can wipe it off...is it stopping him feeding

It doesnt stop him from feeding. He is just going through what seems to be colic symptoms....windy, griping, crying.

get doc to check.Oral thrush is easy to diagnose and treat

he might be crying if he is uncomfortable with thrush.
