dd has a dental abcess

she had a big filling replaced last week and its been painful ever since she wakes up today with an abcess so i took her to the on call dentist who has given her anti biotics and then she has to go back to our own dentist in a week to have it out
shes scared as they wont do it under g.a
she is only 8 ,im worried it will scare her for life.
has anyones young child had an extraction in the chair??

Why won't they do extraction under GA?

the on call dentist says it costs the nhs hundreads of pounds for just one tooth
i have made her an appointment with our usual dentist on friday morning to discuss options.

Is it a permanent tooth? If so, she seems very young to have an extraction. If permanent, could they do a root canal with a crown instead of an extraction?

Any chance you could pay the extra for a GA, or have the whole proceedure done privately?

Also ask if they will 'seal' her back teeth to help prevent future cavities. DD (also 8) had it done last week at the dentist, and it is supposed to help a great deal. But, it was a private dentist, and only back molars were done.

Must be very distressing for you and her.

DD1 had the same at about the same age. She was terrified but the extraction was fine - the local was pretty painless (dentist rubbed anaesthetising gel on her gum before the injection, iirc) and it was over in seconds.

The worst part was def the pre-appointment nerves, which are inevitable.

But ask your dentist exactly how he would proceed with a very nervous child. Ours was fabulous.

ds1 has terrible teeth and has had 3 abcess this year. I have refused anitibiotics as he had too many in the early years - part of the reason his teeth are so bad. The dentist took out the filling, cleaned the area and replaced the filling - each time the abcess has gone down withough antibiotics. The dentist doesn't want to take teeth out as they are milk teeth and are due to come out soon anyway - also age 8. He is really brave for the dentist though and doesn't mind having treatment.

no its a milk tooth, she had some extractions and fillings done under g.a when she was 5 ,it was one of those fillings that fell out last week and the dentist refilled it ,now it has an abcess.
have no way of going private ,money is extremely tight at the moment.

Oh yes earlybird, DD1 has had her molars sealed too as she has inherited DH's poor enamel, poor girl. Painless and def worth doing.

My daughter is 8, going to be 9. She had a dental abscess and two teeth extracted under local a few weeks ago. It was a private dentist. She complained that the local anaesthetic tasted horrible and that she felt "really weird" but otherwise took it pretty much in her stride and is now showing off her extracted teeth to whoever wants to see!

I had 2 extractions when I was about 12, so I appreciate I was much older than your daughter. I actually remember very little about it so it can't have been too bad. The worst part was the dentist coming towards me with what seemed to be the most enormous wrench!!!

I remember a pulling sensation, but not much pain and I would imagine less pain than she is in now.

thankyou for all your good advice i will be asking for the gel before the injection ,where do i stand if he wont do that for her ?
im also concerned that it will crumble as there isnt too much above the gum to get hold of iyswim.
what would happen in that event?

im still concerned - the abcess seems to be getting bigger despite the ani biotics !
she is not in much pain and is still going to school. im thinking the dentist will want to drain the pus away - how likly is this ???

get her to a dentist ASAP. If the infection is spreading, it may aggrevate the trigeminal nerve in her jaw - and the pain will be excruciating.

if you can't urgently access a dentist, do you live near a dental hospital?

its not painful at themoment we have seen the dentist and he says he is going to take out the tooth on tuesady after school,im concerned as her abcess hasnt completly gone he didnt want to give her anymore antibiotics
does that sound right to you ?

yes re abcess not disappearing completely - my dentist said anti-bs rarely get rid of the problem as they don't stop infection from re-entering the site by the same route. The only cure is to remove the tooth.

I hope it went well and your DD is ok now.
