Chickenpox in 5.5 month old

DD2 has just caught it from DD1. We survived it with DD1 with Piriton (calamine and bicarb of soda too but I am not sure how much help they were). As I understand it you cant use Piriton if they are less than a year? Any other suggestions?

Is DD2 very spotty? DS2 had it a few weeks ago at exactly the same age as your DD2 and had very few spots so it wasn't really an issue. I do know that the virus gathers strength as it goes through a family so your DD2 may get it worse. Oats in bath are supposed to be good (put them in a muslin, let running water go through it and squeeze it in the water).

thanks - not many spots yet - just a few on head and in crease of neck and nappy. I assume they will increase by tomorrow am if they are going to.

My understanding is that if they only get it mildly at this age they will prob not be immune?

Yes, I think if it is contracted when they are less than a year old and mildly then they can get it again.

That's exactly where DS2 had his spots. As soon as his nappy was off he was scratching but when they were covered up he didn't seem bothered and he was fine in a couple of days.

dd2 had it at exactly that age (caught from dd1) and was too ill, lots of spots though. She is now 8 and has never had it again so I assume she is immune. Just remembered dd3 hasn't had it yet though - bet she gets it next spring when she'll be three.

dd3 caught it when dd2 had it
she was 4 weeks old and quite a lot of spots but didn't seem too bothered
calamine was fine

she then caught it again at 14 months
same again good covering but not awful

and she has just recovered from shingles at 2.6

that was worse and she needed antivirals to try and stop lasting nerve pain afterwards

DS was prescribed Vallergan when he had the Pox at that age - BUT he had infected pox & looked like an encrusted monster in a sci fi film

It contains an antihistamine & is used as a pre-med so it knocked him right out as he couldn't sleep before he had it.

If your DS gets bad, ask the GP to prescribe something safe for him.

hi there - still relatively few spots and not bothered so looks like she is getting is mildly (she is still bf so i dont know if would affect it it or not). So on that basis i assume she won't be immune :-(
