What should I put in a First Aid Kit for kids??

DS (aged 2.4) got his first wound today. He fell over and grazed his knee. I brought him home and realised I had nothing to treat it with - he's never done anything worse that bruised himself a little before!

I cleaned the graze with a babywipe and put some sudocrem on and he seemed happy with that but it made me realise how badly prepared I am for him hurting himself. (and I spent the next 20 minutes worrying he would get the cream on everything - that stuff never comes out!)

So, I have a couple of hours off tomorrow morning to go maternity bra shopping and thought I'd try to pop in to Boots to get myself a toddler first aid kit while I'm out. So far on my list are Antiseptic Cream, Wound Wash and Plasters....

is there anything else I need?

you antiseptic wipes, which are quite handy, cotton wool, is good wet for wiping blood away, you could get tweezers for splinters, you could get some stickers, for being so brave

Some cotton gauze dipped in water is better (sorry), wipe from the inside out, then use a fresh one. Cover with a plaster if it's still bleeding, change daily.

Eye drops are a good idea, some steristrips, a sling (incase of wrist/hand accidents), a big bandage, some paracetamol, diarolite, threadworm tablets, scissors and assorted sticking plasters. I have melonin(sp?) and tape but never use it. Some plasters for blisters is a good idea, antiseptic wipes are better then the cream, you can also use these to clean the area down before you stick him back together. Oh, don't forget the lollipops!!

Don't use cotton wool, the bits stick inside the wound.

Some gauze is a good idea, aswell as some little bottles of saline.

One of our most used things is Mr Bump - it's a cold pack in the shape of Mr Bump (obviously) and he lives in the fridge. I'm not sure if he actually does any good - sometimes maybe - but his placebo effect is great and dd always asks for him when she's fallen over.

Cool and soothe(sp?) pads are good.

I knew babywipes weren't the best choice but he had dirt in the graze and I didn't ahve anything else. I got the worst out and we cleaned it properly in the bath this evening.

I've got some spare tweezers I could put in my kit and some Calpol for pain relief (paracetamol). I can find some scissors to put in and I think I have some steristrips in the bathroom cabinet.

Triangular bandages and threadworm tablets seem a bit scary though!!!

I love the idea of Mr Bump and stickers I was thinking some character plasters might be good but I'm guessing they don't stick as well as the plain ones and will cost more too. Maybe a plain one and some stickers would be better?

Will look at some antiseptic wipes too - I always used the spray wash when I was getting stuff pierced as a teenager cause it washes out the wound but still leaves it non greasy so plasters stick...

Wipes would be good for the mobile kit though

I have a Mr Bump and he's in the fridge chilling.

I also have plasters and Savlon and some antiseptic wipes and wash to go with the tweezers ad scissors and Calpol and steristrips and bandage I had in the medicine cabinet. Feeling much more prepared now.

He's fine now thanks dm623 - still demanding more cream everytime he notices the graze but as it makes him feel better, I've been letting him have some. Doesn't even have to be antiseptic cream - even a bit of excema cream will do apparently

He's found the Mr Bump and thinks that's fab and has had a plaster and decided he doesn't like it - but at least I'm a little more prepared now.
