How to get a urine sample from a toddler?

As above, has anyone any suggestions for getting a urine sample from a 23 month old non verbal child who is nappies?

He is nowhere near toilet training so predicting a wee is vv difficult, and is non verbal so can't commnicate easily either. How do I get a urine sample into a jar?

Totally stumped here, any thoughts appreciated!

Either follow him around with a potty and pour it in or press the spot, slightly above his penis (where his bladder is) and he'll wee. Catch it in the potty and pour it in.

Someone once told me that blowing on their tummy helps them to wee (not sure how true this is but I suppose it wouldnt hurt to give it a go)

To catch the wee try an old plastic bowl if you have no potty then fill up the lovely little sample bottle from that.

Get a proper bag thingy from the GP/Chemist.

It has a hole and you peel the sticky label off, poke his penis into the hole and attatch it to his skin. Put nappy on, trail bag out of leg of nappy (V important bit! or not so effective)

Or put lots of cotoon wool balls into his nappy and leave on as normal, squeeze out into a sample pot. NB this not so good if testing for UTI as not so sterile method, but fine if testing for organic compounds in urine.

I'll ask in the chemist for that, although I don't have much faith in them at the moment. I brought a prescription in to them yesterday and they couldn't give to me as they didn't know what it was. I went home and found it on google in 10 seconds, brand name, dosages and everything!

Also like the cotton wool method. Not testing for UTI, so should be fine.

Let him walk around with no nappy and leave a tap running. Keep a beady eye on him and as soon as he starts, catch the flow in a potty.. Appreciate this means you will need to be surgically attached to both a potty and your son but since he will have no bladder control, it shouldn't take too long.

Give him a big drink of water/juice then sit him on the potty, and sit next to him and play/read for a while until he does the deed

I don't have a potty I never used one with my eldest, we went straight to the toilet. I could try with a bowl maybe?

Put a cheapo sanitary towel into his nappy then squeeze it out for the sample. That's what they did for my son when he needed to give one about the same age. Or just put a basin between your legs and sit him on your lap over the bowl and give him a drink. Sometimes they wee when they have a cold drink.

The chemist wont give out the bags you are better to go to your a & e or childrens ward and just be cheeky and ask. Our gp surgery used to give out kits, like a sanitary tablet you put in the nappy and then rip the inside out put it in a large syringe and squeeze the wee out, however they have stopped doing this because of cost so i also go the hospital for them x

I had to go back to my GP 3 times for a bag after a few aborted attempts to collect the wee from my DS - he poo'ed on one of them, managed to wee outside of the another (must have slipped off his willy in his nappy) and then 'refused' to wee for hours and hours on another until the bag was a mangled heap and useless.

Last time I had to get a sample, the hospital said they didn't use the bags any more as they didn't stay sterile. They sent me away with a little petri dish to collect it in.

I eventually got my DS to fall asleep with no nappy on and as he sleeps with his bum in the air normally I positioned the dish under his willy and waited......and waited.....and waited. I was there for 2 frigging hours staring at his bum until he wee'd!!

First time I had to get a sample he was about 11 mo and the hospital asked me to get him to wee into the pot and I looked at them a bit [hmmm] and they said 'oh, isn't he potty trained then?'. Ummmm....NO!

you can get a bag that you tape on, don't know how a toddler would tolerate it though.

I thnk they need to give you a container because otherwise it wouldn't be sterile. I've had to do this lots with DD and usually put her in front of a dvd with something to drink and sit in front of her with a container to cath it in. Used to use the bags when DD was little but she'd probably pull them off now. They are less time consuming though if he would keep it on.

just seen you have got a jar, I would try to catch it in that if at all possible or if you need to use somethig bigger then make sure it is sterile. Will quite possible be getting one of these from my DD later so will be in same boat!
