fluoride gel on teeth

Is it standard practice to put this on children's teeth when there's no sign of decay? During a routine exam last week, Ds1's dentist just whipped out the gel and painted it on without asking me. When I questioned him he said that DS1's teeth were fine and it was 'precautionary'

Anyone else experienced this?

I am anxious to find out more about this fluoride gel as I live in Glasgow and they are planning to put this on the teeth of P1 school children (hmm). I am very careful about what my children eat and they have never had any problems with their teeth. Should I allow this?

there is an initiative in Scotland at the moment (but not in my area at the moment) to try and improve the dental health of the children. It is called childsmile and there is a website for info about it:
