Is this normal?

Ds2 is baby number 4 and none of the others have had this. He has a small V shape at the bottom of his spine and below that in between his bum cheeks quite a small but deep dimple. I am seeing doc next week but googled and worried my self. Any one any expeience?

Should have added that he is 3 months

My dd2 had this. I googled and got the words 'spina bifeda' and worried myself sick. The doctor couldn't see where the dimple ended it was so deep, so she was sent for a full ultrasound of her spine when she was about 6 weeks old. All was fine thankfully!

I have one of these and so does dd1. It's called a sacral dimple and causes neither of us a problem. I might add that I only realised what mine was when dd1 was born and the midwife noticed it on her and me!

Apparently it may mean we have an extremely mild form of spina bifida but I was never even aware of having it til 2.5 years ago. Dd1 is perfectly normal in every way too.

Don't worry if they do a scan on your ds, my dd had one and it was fine.

Actually I think dd2 was more like three months by the time she had the scan.

Try not to worry, but you are doing the right thing getting him checked.

My dd2 had been at a creche a whole year before the people working there noticed the dimple, then they panicked and called a nurse to have a look at it! I reassured them that we had noticed it when she was born and she had had a scan and all was fine. I was surprised they took so long to see it, considering they were changing her nappies all of that time

Thanks, my health visitor is going to pop in later for a wee look, said she hadn't noticed at 6 week check I am confident he is find though as he has just managed to wriggle right off the back of his changing mat!

Both my ds and dd have this a consultant has told us both times that it is the mildest possible form of spina bifida, but will not affect their health in any way.

We didn'k know this with ds only found out with dd, apparently you are more likely to have a child with spina bifida with complications eventually, if your children have this, so having had two healthy children we have decided to count our blessings and not have any more.

I have to admit, I was far more careful about taking my folic acid in my subsequent pregnancies.

God if it is anything I will feel terrible as i never took it. I have just looked at ds1 who is 2 and he does have a small dimple at the very bottom of his spine, ds2's is deeper and he has the swollen v shape thing as well maybe just because he is still very young? Neither of my dds had anything like this but as we have 4 don't think we will be having any more anyway!

Don't feel terrible. I took folic acid regularly during dd1's pregnancy and really looked after myself. She has one. With dd2's pregnancy I only took it for the first couple of months,was constantly exhausted from dd1 and ddidn't look after myselft at all. She hasn't got one.
There's no rhyme or reason!

Thanks Melmog my gp saw us today as i was upset about it and reassured me but has referred us to the hospital so shall just wait and see
