Growing pains - what has been your experience?

DS(4) is waking about fortnightly with pains in his legs and feet at night - no mention of them the next day. All I have done so far is rub his legs and on one occasion gave him calpol. Did your children go through this and what helped?

DD - 7 hasn't and is tall for her age so guess she did a lot of fast growing?

Sounds like my DD. When she was 4-5 she had growing pains a lot. Usually after busy days when she had been active. It would either start in the evening, or wake her up in the night. She would often be in a lot of pain with it.
We used to rub her legs and occasionally calpol too. The other thing that we found helpful was giving her a hot water bottle to put on her legs.

My dd has had growing pains in her legs since she was about 2. She's now nearly 5 and still gets them. She is tall for her age and I always assumed that was why she seemed to get them so bad. So, I don't know, I suppose maybe some children are more prone than others.

I give her calpol which sorts it out.

out of my five, all have had growing pains at differnt points (and starting at differnt ages), 3 of them really badly. DS2 in particular started having leg pains at age 3!

I give calpol and nurofen, make a hot water bottle and always keep ski-socks in the airing cupboard or on radiators in the winter, so they have thick warm socks to pull up high on their legs, and within 20mins the pains have gone.

I rub their legs lots too, while the calpol kicks in, and then they relax and the warmth does the rest of the work.

I mentioned growing pains to our GP the other day as DD (3) gets day time pains and she said that she didn't like the term and that any pains in a child should be inverstigated by a doctor - so maybe worth you getting DS checked out.

Both of mine (12 and 5) suffer with growing pains. Dh and i both did as children too.
It bloody hurts!!!...i remember it very well.
They both have pains about twice a week.I give calpol

I have considered asking GP about them but it doesn't seem to be enough to make an appt alone for. If I was there about something else I would mention it. DS doesn't even remember waking the next day so he can't describe the pain.

Thanks for the tips about the warm socks and water bottles. I will give them a try next time.

my DS (4) gets them too - we also use warm socks and Calpol.
