Advice appreciated for little boy.....

Ds2 is currently waking up every half an hour or so, he seems to be running a fever and having lots of chesty breathing with some coughing,

He has had a hoarse voice all day with a wheezy sounding breath, am going to book emergency appointment at docters for him tomorrow. I have wiped his head with damp cloth and smothered him in vicks but is there anything else i can do to help the poor sod (and me) get some sleep tonight?

Has he had his whooping cough jab?

If he's wheezy then your best bet is to call NHS direct to be honest.

He is 3 in september, I dont recall a whoopng cough jab he has yet to recieve his 2nd booser jabs are they in there?

That could be a problem TWR. I really do think you need to get some advice from NHS direct. Do you have the number?
He does sound unwell so I really would give them a call. Do mention the wheezing/fever.

whooping cough is given at 2,3 and 4 months so ages ago

I would prop him up on some pillows, give him some nurofen and keep an eye on him
If his breathing gets fast and the muscles in between his ribs start to move in and out I would get him seen.
Is the cough barking like a croupy cough?

Personally, I had exactly this at exactly the same age and was lucky enough to have a nephew who was a paramedic. Called him, he could hear DS over the phone and thought it might be croup. Took him to the ambulance station as I was lucky enough to live over the road. They assessed him in the back of an ambulance and said he should go to A & E. This is not to scare you cos croup is quite common. If he coughs, does it sound like a dog barking? Personally, only because it is worrying for you, could you get him to A & E if it is scaring you? Try what I did,running a really hot bath to make the bathroom steam up, and sitting in there with him. Have you given him Calpol, Childrens Ibuprofen etc? Has it had any effect? Karvol capsules? Croup is horrible to hear but really easily treatable IF it is that. I'm not diagnosing in the slightest, but something to consider maybe? If it is, all DS was given was an injection of some kind at the hospital, and a breathing mask for a time to open up his lungs. He was fine in a couple of days, certainly much better the next day. Call NHS direct. It certainly can't hurt, it's what they are there for, and they might really help.

We are very lucky to have such a service, people should use it more IMO

If it's croup I had it when I was little, it was really scary. I couldn't breathe and though I was going to die! The Dr said to get me to inhale steam. (I think I did it with a towel over a bowel, but not sure if I remember this bit right?) By the time the Dr showed up I was right as rain

I reckon it's worth a try, if you have to wait for NHS direct to call back.

On hold with hnhs now she thinks its croup is on about finding a docter to see do they expect me tpo take them out somewhere at thia time of night r will they come out?

I think it depends on how ill he is. You may have to beg them to come out, it's a PITA.

Wait and see what they say, they may just advise you to take him to A&E/call an ambulance for you.

I expect they will expect you to take him to an out of hours doc- doctors very rarely come out IME.

DD1 used to get croup. I used to take her into the bathroom and run the shower on hot to make steam- helps with the cough.

But if he's struggling to breathe I really would take him to A and E

I think their jus going to tell me to keep trying to get nurofen and water into him like im not already trying to do that

Theres no way i could get ds1 to walk anywhere at this time of night and i dont think its deemed serious enough for a+e.

Looks like im just going to have to stay up all night harrasing him

If he's wheezy then they will tell you to take him to A&E. Ds is asthmatic, I've called them on the odd occasion that ds is wheezy and the inhaler isn't doing alot and they always call an ambulance for him.

Hes not astmatic, ive managed to get him to take some nurofen and he had a sip of water so mayby with any luck he will go to sleep i have him in my bed and hes begging for a cuddle but hes so hot im afriad to make him worse!

They couldnt get hold of my docters so said ring them and be connected tot he out of hours service in area. Theyve taken details and said we will ring back within an hour or so.

Am going to try and lie down with him only worried if we fall asleep and miss t6he call

But he wont sleep without a cuddle from me so not sure what to do im so tired

TBH IMO and having had my experience, if it is croup, if you have got the Nurofen into him and he sleeps, then that is a bonus. For DS not for you. Monitor his breathing. If he is sleeping soundly without coughing, even though it might be raspy, and his temperature drops, he should be doing alright. It is usually only a problem if because of everything, he can't sleep, is distressed and can't breathe adequately. It's worse for you sometimes, staying up for hours watching him. I am NOT a doctor, and this is experience only. If you can possibly get to the hospital if you are that worried, do so, even if it means taking another child with you. They'll get over it. Otherwise, see if he drops into a good sleep and be prepared for a crap night worrying. Sorry I can't be of anymore help. I know it's horrible.

Hi sorry i never got back we did eventuallyfall asleep in my bed, been a walking zombie last few days couldnt get him in docters so i just went to chemist and asked advice and was told that it seems to be a chesty summer cold so brought loads of medicine and he seems to be getting better. Got appointment tomorow anyway just to make sure its not an infection but i doubt it as me and ds1 have got it too

Anyway i remembered finaly that i left a thread on ehre so just wanted to come back and say hanks for all the advice
