DS takes a LONG time doing number twos

Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.
My DS sits on the loo doing his number 2's for about half an hour. By the time he finishes he his legs are dead and he can't stand up!
I just wondered if this is normal. His pre-school keep informing me of the time it takes him and I think they're getting fed up of it as they have to stay with him while he's 'on the job', and it obviously takes one of them away from the rest of the class for quite a while.
Today DS came home from pre-school and told me he cried while he was on the loo today, and then told me that one of the helpers asked him if he could save the rest til later, which I wasn't too happy with, as I don't want him to get a complex about going the loo!
Any comments welcome.......

They shouldn't be moaning about him, poor thing. At least he's not saving it for on the carpet. Rushing it and straining isn't good for the muscles in the bottom so I'm tempted to say nothing. Is he a little constipated though and finding it difficult?

I'm not sure if he is consipated, he doesn't seem to be straining and doesn't say it hurts (he's 4 and I think he'd tell me if it did). Maybe he just likes to take time over it, he is male after all!!
I'm going to have a word about it when I go in tomorrow.

Yes, my ds always takes ages so at home he has a footstool so he doesn't get dead legs. He has got better (he's 8 now!)but still takes a while of an evening so I regard it as the perfect opportunity to for him to get his homework/school reading done at the same time.

At pre-school though I think the staff should just accept it - at your ds's age, that sort of thing is just par for the course in their job. Some people just take longer than others. Having said that, when ds was going through a spell of taking a particularly long time, giving him a couple of dried apricots as a snack or tinned prunes and custard for pudding helped!

Just thought - does it actually take that long or is he a bit dreamy? Just asking because sometimes I go and ask if ds has finished and he comes back from daydreaming on planet Zog, looks surprised and finds he actually finished ages ago...

Yes, don't let them hurry him, it'll be upsetting and straining really isn't a good idea. Could he have a set time to go? Sometimes training them to go to do a poop at the same time every day can help. Ds usually goes after school (takes a book ), which works as there's no hurry then. I do tend to shout up after 10 minutes to make sure he's not flushed himself down the toilet. He's still here happily.

My ds takes ages too. He is almost 5 and will start school after the summer. I wonder if his teacher will be about the length of time it takes... although nursery have never mentioned it.

When dh or I take him to the toilet when we are out and about and he then announces he 'needs poos' our hearts sink and we immediately sit down nearby and get comfy for the looong wait!

I think he does take that long, I go back to him periodically to check then leave him to it.
I will try the apricots and will also get him a bigger foot stool as his legs aren't long enough for the one he uses for the sink.
Thank you, nice to know he's not the only one, talking to friends no-one elses ds or dd's take nearly as long!

I am with you on the heart sinking when out and about, we were at a soft play area when he needed it one day and they closed while he was on the loo, but he wouldn't be rushed!! I was really embarrassed though as staff wanted to go home.
DS also starts school in sept so I think I may mention it to the teacher!

kids usually work out themselves to g for a poo at home once they start school, they just switch poo -time
It just won't be feasible for him to spend half an hour in the loo at school I'm afraid

I had a lovely friend when I was at Uni. She was my drinking buddy and we had many nights of hitting the town, she took ages in the loo, I mean ages. I've no idea why, I could drink her under the table! I've yet to meet another person who spends half an hour going for a wee. I did wonder why.

do you know, i think my ds may have already arranged his 'poo-times' to be at home times during his nursery days. mostly anyway.... guessing he'll save it for home most of the time .

however, i still remember in p2 my lovely teacher challenging a girl on return from the toilet about the length of time she'd been gone. "i was doing a poo!" she replied!
