17 Month old & hobbling

Going to keep this short - Child in my family (won't name her as not sure if her Mum is on MN) is 17 months old and has been hobbling and sitting down in pain lots. GP initially not helpful but after some pushing has agreed to an x-ray which is happening later this week. GP isn't sure where issue lies - knees or hips - but has asked for bloods to be done.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be? We are all worried.

I'm not medical, so it could be a number of things, but it could also be arthritis. No-one thinks of arthritis in children, but it does exist. However it could be lots of other things, I only know a bit about arthritis which is why I mention it.

Hope whatever is wrong is identified quickly, it must be such a worry not knowing.

My ds3 started hobbling not long ago - took him to GP and was sent straight to hosp in case of hip infection - nothing found - went back again - nothing found... and again ... thought they may have scanned him????!

He's stopped hobbling! In fact, whenever we got near a doctor, he stopped doing it.

My friend had this a while ago with her 15 month old. She had all x-rays scans and blood tests and nothing was revealed. He just stopped.

Just recently DH developed very sore and swollen ankle on one leg and knee on the other. After all of his tests (bloods, fluid sample, x-ray, scan) came up negative, they concluded that it was Reactive Arthritis. It was his response to a very inconsequential virus he had about 10 days before.

It made me wonder whether my friend's little boy had the same thing. When I told her she said that he did have a viral infection about a week before. So you never know.

The good news for DH and perhaps your relative is that there is nothing to say that he will ever suffer with it again.

My little dd was hobbling yesterday and spent the morning in the hospital. She has transient synocitis which happens after a virus, or fever and will pass with time she is content and as long as it improves I am relaxed. She was poorly in the 24 hrs prior to hobbling with a temp. so it figures.

My daughter did the same thing at 18 months, it was a viral infection that had caused irritable hip. She couldn't walk for about a week but is absolutley fine now (aged 3). it was very worrying at the time though with x-rays and blood tests etc.
