Could be anything, virus, chicken pox, teeth, the list is endless [sigh]

Ice pops are a good way of getting liquid into a child

Calpol to lower his temp, will he entertain a mid-afternoon nap?

I would say a virus. Keep offering water.

I would give him calpol to get temp down and just keep offering a drink. I would give him squash if he is not eating or drinking as blood sugar and salt can get low and cause other problems, and he may be more likely to drink it if it's sweet.

I hope he feels better soon

Thanks everyone, he was going into complete meltdown when I posted, I had a cup of water and one of juice for him and he was crying and saying no and kicking when offered, but his throat sounds so hoarse poor mite.

He had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago and was surprisingly okay with it, it could be teeth, his head feels hot but his temp is normal.

Anyway in the last half hour he perked up, drank half a cup of juice, wolfed down a pack of raisins, a brioche roll and a biscuit, and started playing with his cars happily.

He does look terrible though, red eyed and pale. Poor baby, it is a reminder of how much he is still a baby to me. Think I'll keep him home tomorrow unless he is completely his usual self.
