Ds (17mo) has a sore willy

It has been like it since Friday, going to try and get him an appointment tomorrow. Been washing it with cool water, changing nappy frequently, giving him nappy free time (which he loves ). Have also been applying sudocream as well.
It just looks sore and the skin looks dry & peeling - the end of it looks particularly sore and swollen. It doesn't seem to bother him - doesn't stop him playing with it anyway
There has been a little bit of blood on his nappy as well, which is why I am concerned, I guess he could have scratched it while playing with it in the bath, so maybe I'm overreacting, but to me it looks quite worrying.
Any other suggestions/comments?

DOn't put any bubbles int he bath, and stop putitng cream on it. My ds had similar and needed antibiotics and special cream (they prescribe eye cream as it has a big pointed dropper on the end...). If they do give antibiotics, ask them to make it a nice flavoured one. The first one they gave us was bright pink and foul tasting. Second one tasted like banana milkshake

Thrush?

OK thanks - we have been bathing him in plain water, but I shall stop with the cream.
3littlefrogs - it did occur to me it might be thrush but am not sure.

DS2 had this a few weeks ago. Eventually, I went to the gp, who perscribed oral antibiotics and canesten cream. It cleared up in a few days.

I'd see your doctor asap. I wish I'd gone sooner and saved DS2 a lot of discomfort.

Hiya how odd, but ditto 17mnth old with "mild" balinitis. I didn't consider that amount of yellow puss to be mild but the gp refused to give him anything but antibiotic cream. ( I knew I shouldn't have cleaned it an hour before seeing the gp )

One thing I have noticed which my hv agreed with me is that often disposable nappies absorb so well that they can cause a drying of the foreskin which can then cause thrushy / infection problems. DS is now in washables and it seems a lot less irritated, but I bet I have to take him back to the gp this week!

kitkat, it's funny you should say that, as we use washables on ds and the gP told us they might be a factor That GP turned out to be useless anyway. Ds was diagnosed with balanitis for about a month before we saw a wonderful practice nurse who eventually prescribed the right cream and antibiotic. The diagnosis went from balanitis to thrush, to molloscum to finally being diagnosed as the skin infection it turned out to be. We were advised to have as much nappy-off time as possible, the problem being that when it's so irritated he will scratch. They think the infection got in in the first place where he had scratched it.

Hi littlelamb, My ds has a hole where the foreskin joins the penis which keeps on filling up with yellow puss, as you wipe it comes out and on the occasion before seeing the gp there was nearly enough to cover my thumbnail. The gp refused to believe that the "dimple" had had puss coming out and inferred I was exagerating. She also retracted his foreskin all the way to check it properly and I had to tell her that it shouldn't be retracted like that at 17mnths and to stop - I guess thats where the consultaion started to go down hill! I have been packing it with the antibiotic cream and it does look a bit better. I think the reason I am worrying about it is because she (the gp) refused to listen to me at all and was really dissmissive. He deffinatley seems more comfortable in washables ( i've only just started using them) so i'm going to go with them for the time being and i've given myself a time limit that if it doesn't look really improved by tuesday im going back to see the head of the practise.

DS2 is in washable nappies as well. I find that disposables give him an awful rash and he is allergic to the sticky bits. The balinitis started after he had a day or two in disposables when our washing machine was on the blink.

I've heard that silk liners are good for very sensitive skin/infections. But they are very expensive and should really be washed in a delicate cycle if not by hand!

Btw, I think the doctor gave DS2 antibiotics because he has severe eczema and a history of nasty skin infections. I think she wanted to treat him quite aggressively.

Sorry just come back to this thread, took DS to the GP and he prescribed some antibiotic cream - his willy is on the mend
It's the same stuff that he was prescribed for conjunctivitis last year only in a cream form rather than the drops!

Incidentally, I was thinking about getting some silk liners, ds is also in washables, but the thought of hand washing them put me off

Don't blame you BT, there is more to life that hand washing - I just butchered an old fleece to make a liner and someone else has suggested bamboo liners because they are antibacterial.
