Colitis in a 4 year old?

My ds (just 4) was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about three weeks ago. We are coming to terms with it slowly. He is a little lad, and has had symptoms for nearly a year now, so it is good to have something to help us finally.

He has been prescribed prednisolone and sulfasalazine, which have improved his mood tremendously and his tummy ache but not really improved his bowels all that much. I am guessing he will be prescribed more steroids soon...

Can anyone tell me, how 'solid' are they going to get, once the correct level of medication are identified? Are they always going to smell like they do, and will he never get much warning before a bowel movement?
