Do children sometimes have a different rash at the start of chicken pox?

Asking as ds2 has had a virus type thing for almost a week now, and is still very spotty all over but it didn't seem like chicken pox...however my friend says she thought that's what it was, and I can see some of the spots have tiny scabs on them...I mean really tiny.

He has one on his ear which is bigger and redder with a yellowy middle, but that only came up today. The rest have been tiny weeny splodgy bumps.

It's a bit confusing, he was exposed to chicken pox about 3 weeks ago.

Can it start off with a different kind of rash then gradually, sort of, evolve?

sounds like it to me
Id take him to the gp
or is that frowned upon if there are preggers ladies in the waiting room?

Cheers...think frowned on is right.

We went to the GP last night (out of hours) who had no idea what it was.

It's a bit odd. Maybe he just has a virus after all.

Think the ear spot is fading anyway now I've looked again.

I was kind of hoping he would get it now, iyswim...easier when they are smaller i think.
