Using Pripsen for threadworm. Advice please

DD3 (20 months) has been suffering with a sore bottom for a week now. Finally narrowed it down to threadworm on Friday night. Pharmacist recommended Pripsen and I tried to give it to her on Saturday morning.

She should have had a teaspoon of the powder dissolved in water but after the first few sips refused completely. We tried various methods to get her to take it but I think we only managed about half the dose in the end.

Anyway Saturday night was fine but she was really distressed with it last night. How soon should she be getting relief? Does she need to take more? And how the heck will I get it into her? Help!

Try mixing it with yoghurt.

[BTDT exasperated look]

No help at all, but how the word Pripsen brought back hideous childhood memories! I can't remember what my mother did to get us all to drink it....it was disgusting!

Poor you and poor dd.

Sorry to be so unhelpful!

Yes tried that... Raspberry Petits Filous as I thought it would taste similar.

Do you think she needs more then?

I think they're meant to have a second dose 2 weeks after the first but my memory is vague.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2009 18:45

FWIW, a dosing syringe doesn't work because the s*dding powder doesn't dissolve properly and a fair amount remains in the syringe after you've given the dose. Don't bother trying it

I'm with mrsbabookaloo... it is the worst thing I have ever tasted... and it was nearly 30 years ago...

Haven't they invented anything better yet?

SoupDragon · 18/05/2009 18:57

Not for the under 2s, no. Ovex is Ok for over 2s though.

prisen disolves better in milk than it does in water.

Elibean · 18/05/2009 20:42

I took it when pg, as dd had suspected threadworm and OB said I could - actually thought it tasted quite nice

It does dissolve better in milk than in water, and yes, I'm afraid she probably does need more: if she only took half a dose, it may not have been enough, plus she needs a second dose in 14 days' time (or whatever it says on the packet, can't quite remember).

It doesn't kill worms, it paralyzes them and contains a mild laxative to help you poo them out (sorry, ugh I know). So if you're not spotting lots of dopey worms in her nappy....

Is she old enough to try bribery? Medicine followed by chocolate button?

Oh God, hideous childhood memories emerging now. Hated it so much that I still can't have any kind of raspberry/strawberry milkshake drink now! Only ever had to have it twice - second time got my brother to drink my dose

Sorry, that trip down memory lane was of absolutely no use to you whatsoever.

Well we had success yesterday afternoon with a Fruit Shoot - anything with a sports cap is always a winner!

Laxative effect seems to have kicked in, so hopefully we're getting somewhere
