Is this a virus - or could there be something else wrong?

My DD had a high temperature and vomiting four days ago. I kept her off school until she was in better form. When I picked her up from school today she was not in good form - tired and grumpy and then this evening she got very lethargic and when I checked her temperature it was very high. I gave her some medicine and she has gone off to bed. Is there yet another virus going round or could it be something else that is bothering her.

There's quite a few nasty virii doing the rounds. We've all had something similar in the last week. But sounds like your DD could do with a trip to the docs if it's still making her sick by Monday.

Thanks for taking the time to post a message. I think I'll do that if shes not better by Monday.

BTW when you say very high temperature, what did you mean?

Concepta · 15/05/2009 22:53

It was 39.2 I think but I checked it an hour ago and it was 37.9. I was told some time back that by a doctor that so long as you can get it to 38 then it would be safe enough.

Well over 40 is dangerous. As long as it is reducing with ibuprofen/paracetamol it's okay. DS had a virus a few months ago which was no reducing at all in response to drugs, just pitching ever upwards, till he had a fit. But once they are five it's not such a worry unless it's above 40 and not coming down.

I assume you've checked for rashes and she's not complained of a headache/stiff neck?

I rang the out of hours doctor this morning. The temperature hasn't gone over 40. He said just to keep giving her the medicine and plenty of fluids and it would probably pass in a day or so. If it has not gone by Monday I will take her to my own GP. Thanks for your help.

There seems to be a virus going around where temp and lethargy/exhaustion are the main symptoms. My DD has had it for last 2 days, she just wants sofa&tv/water/bed&sleep.

Thanks knickknack - its reassuring to know that there is something going round. I am just dosing her with medicine. She picks up after a while and then gets lethargic after a few hours, before her next dose of medicine. Hope a couple days rest will help. If only the weather would pick up - that might get rid of all these viruses. Thanks again.
