14 month old has massive ulcer where his 1st left molar is coming through...

It looks like an ulcer but at first I actually thought it was the tip of the tooth I could see poking through. It was when he bit my finger I realised it is like a squishy blister with the tooth under the gum...

Is this normal? It looked like a tiny cluster of crystals (obviously in a painful blister kind of scenario...) it is really horrible.

I am using calgel on it... Any advice?

Could it be an eruption haematoma? - these tend to be blue/grey, like a bruise - one of my children had these with molars. It's caused by bleeding in the gum as the tooth works its way through, and disappears as it finally erupts (took a period of weeks as I remember). If that's what it is then it's nothing to worry about, and I don't think there's anything you can/should be doing other than calgel etc.

But I don't recognise the "cluster of crystals" description so not sure if it's the same thing.

spenthen thanks for getting back to me. It's not really like a bruise. More like a cluster of long warts but made out of squishy gum tissue.

I am going to phone dr 1st thing in the morning as it is really bothering poor LO and my friend who is a nurse has never seen it before (but she doesn't deal with babies or this kind of thing really anyway so she said it might just be a teething related thing).

Just thought I can't be alone in this. I just said it looked like a cluster of crystals cos when I first saw it, it reminded me of the crystal fortress in the Superman movies (sorry...)

No, that sounds like something else doesn't it. Poor little lad. I'm sure the doc will be more helpful than me! Good luck with it.
