I have just found a lump on the back of his head behind his right ear,

I have looked up the symptoms and it could be lymph glads,

He has been ill with a cough and a cold, he is getting better but has come out in a rash over his front and back which i think is viral.

I will be going to the gp in the morning, i am hoping someone has had experience with this and reasure me this is a common thing.

Yes it is very likely to be a gland which has come up as a normal response to his cold.
Try not to worry it will go down once he's over his virus.

I have no idea what it is but I would definitely go to the GP as it might not be linked to the baby's cold.

It does sound like a swollen gland. My ds had two, one at each side of the back of head/ear. I showed the doctor and he said its nothing to worry about they can happen if the baby is a bit run down, he also had a cold. try not to worry but still ask your doctor about it to put your mind at rest.
