Ds1 (5) shivery and coldy, does he need to see Dr?

Sorry if this sounds silly.

He's had a cough for a couple of weeks, but it got worse the other night and he was up coughing a lot. Not really hot or anything.

I kept him off school yesterday and he seemed fine, barely coughed at all, played and ran about.

This morning he was meant to go to a sports thing at a local school, so considering he didn't cough all night and slept fine, I took him and ds2 out on the bike.

On the way he got very pale and started to shiver (it wasn't really cold out), his legs and hands went all mottled, the rest of him was sort of grey and his nose was running a lot.

He decided to come home before we got there, and is now curled up asleep, occasionally coughing and his temp is about 37.7.

I'm not sure what's going on, could it be a chest infection? The cough keeps coming and going iyswim.

he's sleeping again, still v hot (nearly 39 earlier but I've misplaced thermometer.)

do I need to worry? He's not been coughing much, doesn't sound rattly. Is it just a yucky virus?

He won't take calpol - he has a real phobia of it - can I safely leave a temp of 39? Or is there something else I can do?

I'd ring NHS direct and see what they say.
I know some people don't rate it, but I've found it immensely reassuring to get to talk to someone even if just for validation of my own thoughts.
Is the cough chesty or dry (I must admit that I am useless at telling the difference). Might be a chest infection. To me, the fact that a "normal" cough was followed by a temp would make me wonder whether a "normal" virus had turned into a treatable infection.
The mottled skin could just be that he's brewing a nasty virus and just more susceptible to chills and changes in temperature. Wasn't especially hot out here - i.e. I was wearing a cardigan when I was out and about, even in the car.

Hi, I don't have any medical background but I'd ring NHS Direct and ask them.

To get temp down - give plenty of drinks, open the windosw a crack in his room, don't apply a damp cloth as apparently this makes it worse.

Yes- in the absence of meds to get temp down, opening window, removing a layer from the bed (i.e. blanket instead of duvet) and encouraging cold drinks might help.

He does sound like he has an infection. Call NHS direct and get him seen by the out of hours.

He's woken up now and had some water and a lolly.
Fairly cheerful, cough is v chesty and icky so maybe you're right and he needs a-b's.

Am running nice hottish/warm bath to trick body into cooling itself...he wants a bath so I'll go with that. (He always hated the flannel thing, now they say it was wrong!!)

I'll ring OOH tomorrow if no better.

That' still high. You do need to get him checked, please do remember that temperatures rise at night during sleep!

Well I got him to have some more calpol during the night, (miracle/shameless bribery namely Ben10 figures being mentioned) and he slept alright after that,

He seems much better this morning, rang NHS last night who said it's prob a virus and if the calpol is bringing it down that's good.

Oh I hate it when they are ill.
