Is there anything that can be done for a baby's cough?

DS, 4.5 months, has had a cough and a cold for 4 weeks now, he is coughing so violently that he often chokes and brings up entire feeds. It's truly upsetting to watch and he often coughs himself awake several times a night.
Went to the docs last week where I was basically sent away with a flea in my ear as "you can't do anything for a baby's cough" - despite them saying with same breathe that his chest was very rattley and he obviously had an infection.
The cough has got worse and I was wondering if there was anything I could do and how long to leave it before I go back to the GP? Have already tried raising mattress and putting humidifier in room but neither seem to work. TIA for any advice.

If he's had it for this long he needs to go back to the GP.

but if there's an infection and the baby is that young, shouldn't antibiotics be the next call? things can turn bad quickly with chest problems in a wee one.

also, ask for a 'simple linctus' to help with the actual coughing, it's bollocks that there's nothing can be done at that age.

A good tip is cutting up onions and putting them next to the cot.

Is he pulling in his chest when breathing? That's not a good sign if he is.

I would go back. Ds was like this and he was put on AB's and also on an inhaler.

Thanks folks, will try and get an appointment today. I asked about ABs last time and was told no way, but it really is causing him discomfort and he was awake twice last night coughing his guts up .
That's interesting about the onions, will try that!
