Thumb nails coming off!

Hi, two of my children have thumb nails that are in the process of coming off.
They started off being very red around the side of the nail.
Not painful.
DD2's was worse and DP took her to Boots and showed the pharmacist who said it could be a whitlow and gave an ointment-magnesium something to bring the infection out.
Ointment did nothing that I could see, over a week or so.
Nail then had a little crust at the side and started to go yellow and brittle, just on that side.
Took both DDs to nurse at doctor's surgery.
She said it could still be a whitlow although there has never been any pain. She said the nails would probably grow off and probably grow back again. Just keep covered to protect.
I asked what if it might be fungal but she didnt think so and had no idea what might have caused it or why both dds should have this at the same time.
Anyone else had this and what is it?
