Tell me about fevers with teething please

DD1 didn't have temperatures when she was teething, so I have no experience of this.... but 6mo DD2 has had a fever of 38.7 for a couple of nights now, and no other symptoms. She has been grabbing my finger and rubbing it frantically over her lower gum, so I'm wondering whether this could just be to do with teething.

But are teething fevers this high? And if so, do they herald the tooth actually cutting? How long would it last for?

I don't know whether this seems like teething or whether to assume there is something else wrong.

DS was awful teething, really high temperatures, unsettled, unhappy. it was awful, every single tooth.

we used to alternate paracetemol and ibruprofen. the worst episode lasted about 4 days when he had three molars coming through.

good luck

Thanks choufleur! The paracetamol/ibuprofen combo is already my friend...

She's been fine all day, but this evening has a temp of 38.9 again. It's a bit weird, isn't it, just to have a temperature at night and no other symptoms, 3 nights on the trot?

Do you think it is teething?

My DS had a temperature several times when teething, but I found they were always linked to an underlying infection. He had a urine infection twice, an ear infection, and conjunctivitis.

They seemed to coincide with teething (not sure if that was related), but needed treatment. Based on my experience I would get her checked out to eliminate any other sources of problems.

Hm, thanks. Maybe I'll call the doc in the morning. I've been debating it with myself, as I think he'll tell me to go away and come back if it gets worse! She's eating & drinking fine and looks well.

DS often seems to catch other bugs when he was teething (lots of cold etc). wonder if it makes them a bit run down and more prone to catching things.

DS's worst bout was when we were on holiday. the chemist obviously thought i was trying to kills ds when i walked in and asked for mediced (for night times), calpol, calpol sachets (for out and about) and calprofen.

Ds1 had projectile vomiting and high fever with his first two teeth (which came through at the same time) 2nd two arriving together caused high temp and lots of green snot and a bad cough.

ds2 just smiled at me one day and I noticed he'd got a tooth all quietly by himself.

That's interesting about getting other bugs while teething.

I took dd2 to the gp today who says she has a sore throat. So I think that accounts for the fever. But while we were waiting she was rubbing her teether against her gum so hard I could hear it squeaking!
