Nits - do we all have to be done?

Just discovered DD has nits. I am presuming so as I found lots of little dirty bits in her hair, and the odd crawly thing! DH gone to chemist for shampoo and nit comb. Do we all need to be done? IF so, how long does it take as I have a Drs appt at 10:30am, then straight to work and not home again until 9:30pm tonight. DH will do himself and DD, but do we need doing NOW? Also, how many times will it take to kill the fuckers little buggers?

if your dd has got to the stage where you just found them then she is infested and you probably have them. wash your hair run comb through to see if you find any blighters - then panic and wear a hat.

mine have had them numerous times and I have never caught them
I just come through my hair with nit comb and conditioner,would only treat myself if I found some

My hair is pretty short, I have not seen any, DH is going to look in a mo.

He has just been sold stuff which I can't use as I am pg. And which apparantly does not kill the eggs, only the lice, asked for shampooo, given creme. He asked for advice, was given this and its crap.

I found them in DDs hair over the easter break. I used hedrin overnight (the spray version) which actually worked and then every evening I combed through using a nitty gritty comb and conditioner to get the eggs out. 7 days later I used the hedrin again to make sure (as per instructions)

I used hedrin on myself just to make sure but sometimes just the thought of it makes you itch!

if you have short hair a good combing should work. repeat every few days for a couple of weeks. good luck

make sure you have a good nitty gritty type comb not one of those crappy plastic affairs.

If you can bear the smell Tea tree oil is fab the little buggers hate it. Drop some onto your scalp and if you have nits they will run to the boarder quick fast.

I called the pharmacist at a different Boots and she said to use Hedrin, said I can use this while pg, also said this was the most effective and killed much of the eggs as well as the lice themselves, she said Lyclear, which some muppet in a shop sold us, was rubbish, and I could not use it when pg.

How long does it take for the shells to go? DD seems to be lice free for now, but the little hard shells stuck in her hair are not coming out with the comb.

You need a Nitty Gritty comb.

But if your DD's hair is really fine, the only way to get rid of the shells may be picking them out with your nails one by one.

Ah ok, so the shells, they are the eggs? Or where the eggs were? DH bought a metal comb, it is better than the plastic one that came with it. If I condition DDs hair, I can these little eggs/whatever they are out? Poor thing her scalp is very sore right now, and she was so upset! so i have given her a little chocolate for a being a brave girl and will get DH to do it again later. DH took a thorough look at my hair (short one side, longer the other) and I appear clear as does he. Will do it anyway to be sure. I will buy some Hedrin and use this as the repeat in a week.

manky no way!!!! there are tons! her hair is really fine, and really thick, and we don't wash it every day which I why we did not notice before now, i thought it was sand from the beach She hates her hair being brushed so most days its a quick brush with a fight, so have not investigated. I am such a bad mother .

DDs hair is fine but the nitty gritty comb is fab and got the eggs out.

Once clear of them, try spraying her hair every day with a tea tree oil spray.
I've been using it on my lot since our last infestation, and no recurrences in nearly 2 years.

dilute the tea tree oil as neat tea tree oil is not advisable.

pavlov - i was camping for 2 weeks with dd, i had forgotten her hairbrush and she shrieks when i use mine so i had let her go feral, one sunny morning i was lying in the tent admiring my beautiful child sleeping beside me when i noticed her head was crawling with monsters. i felt terrible. she has really fine thick hair too. comb should get most of the eggs out. if they are white the nit has hatched so it is only the grey ones you should concentrate on.

we used Hedrin on dd1s thick curly hair - did the job. We didn't get them (that is me and dp), but dd2 did, but at the time she only had very fine hair so a bit of Hedrin and they were gone.

Yes, dilute the oil, I use it in a water spray.

DH spent £3 on a nit comb, which clearly was not a nitty gritty...he has a lot to learn doesn't he?!! .

I will get some tea tree, dilute and spray, great idea. I love tea tree, DH is allergic, so will keep an eye in case DD is, but weak solution is worth a go...

DH said, now we have that stupid lyclear, we will use it til its finished. Two more times, and 1 hour after last lot I was still picking out live lice [urgh].

SO, as I am suffering horrendously from morning sickness and just can't face leaving the house for a nitty gritty comb or more stuff for hair. I got a bowl of water, sat DD in front of cbeebies, and we had some nice grooming time. I did her hair section by section and I picked out every single one of those little feckers with my nails. It took me 3 hours. And I know thats not the end of it as when I got through it all I went back and did it again, and again, and still found little monsters at the base where I had cleaned.

I will do it again tonight for an hour, and again in the morning. I will hopefully be able to get out later to get a nitty gritty as the one I have is shite.
