Was up last night with him, really screaming and crying but spat out Calpol when DH gave him some. Just been up and he is saying they hurt. He has been a littke ykw so not sure if a habit thing at bed time as he has said it before, never really complains in the day, but last night was the first time he seemed to be in genuine pain.

I am in a crap mother phase atm so would really appreciate some support and advice.

Thank you.

Hi MB,

Just a thought - Could he be having cramps? I used to have leg cramps when I was little (though probably not as little as your DS) and my grandmother (who looked after me) was convinced certain foods set them off! I did outgrow them eventually. Can you ask him to describe the pain? Is it pulling pain or a dull ache? Does it pass after some time? I appreciate that he's only 3.10 so not sure if that is asking too much from a boy his age... Or could it be growing pains? Just wanted to send you some support.

Ax

my DD1 has been the same since she was about that age (shes 6 now), GP said its likely to be growing pains or night terrors. Terrible trick to try is see if they can walk on it normally when its happening. If they can, its unlikely to be anything major. My DD1 has had some blood tests as she does limb but I think its more than likely cramps. We give her pain relief, and rub her legs, normally works well. HTH

It depends on where it is. If it's at the top of his leg (hip) I'd take him to A&E, there's something children can get called Perthes disease which damamges the hip. If it's at the bottom it could possibly be due to him growing, the bones grow and the legs have to stretch to keep up, it's called growing pains but is more like cramp. Try a warm-hot water bottle and some ibuprofen. Take him to A&E if he has leg pain and a fever, they can get a bone infection (Osteolielitis), which is very serious in small children.

Do check this all over with the GP/NHS direct if you are concerned. They are better then mumsnet.

Thanks all.

He generally just points in the direction of his knee but I rub from thigh to ankle.

He has seen a physio for something else so I wil monitor him. DH thinks he is just playing for time but I am sure it was what woke up up the other night, and if not, I wouldn't have expected a tantrum at that time.

He was fine last night.
