DS with raging tonsillitis - adviced needed please

My ds (aged 5) has had tonsillitis since last Friday. He is very poorly bunny, with high temp, horrible snotty nose, tonsills like golf balls covered in white yuk and stinky breath. I took him to the GP yesterday and he reluctantly gave him antibiotics (Penicillin). My question is how long is this likely to last - I have no experience of this at all and neither DS or DD have ever had tonsillitis before. When can I expect to see some improvement (and therefore get some sleep/peace and quiet!)

within 24 hours

Thanks CarGirl.

So if no improvement in that time do I assume:-

a) That it is a viral infection and therefore antibiotics won't work or,

b) They are the wrong antibiotics?

And at what point should I consider taking him back to the GP?

that I have no idea of.

My dd had a raging ear ache - long story, after 2 doses of anitbiotics she was much improved - slept for the first time in 5 days!

If he hasn't improved at all after 3 doses I would ring NHS direct.

Phlox it can last anywhere for 24-48hrs for the anti-biotics to properly kick in. so your DS should start to be back to himself then. if hes still not better take back to GP

I was a tonsilitus sufferer upto the age of 21, until I demanded I have my tonsils out. It is awful, but he will get better. My DP has it at the moment i think (he won't go to GP) and the pharmacist i spoke to today said the virus is stronger than it has been before.

Thanks Muppets. That's good to know
