My son has had a typical day out running about playing football and smells of BO this evening - first time I have noticed it. He's chuffed to bits because he thinks he can wear deodorant (like a man). Is this a bit young for BO? p.s. He had a bath yesterday morning and a shower this morning (however his showering is more standing under water for 10 mins and then shampooing his fringe), but generally his bathes every day.

My DD has been using deodorant since she was 9.

I think it's an age where it would be expected, not too young imho. Perhaps try an occasional use of a simple roll-on or stick variety, something unscented or nondescript? And defo not every day, particularly as you say he has plenty baths and showers. I have a 8yo ds and was starting to wonder similar, the occasional erm aroma, when he's done footballing cycling and heaven knows what all on a saturday... but for now I'm ignoring it

I caught a whiff of my 8 year old dd's armpit when cuddling up to her in bed the other morning and was amazed to catch a hint of bo on her.

Just keep encouraging your ds to wash thoroughly in the shower and let him wear deodorant. I don't think 9 1/2 is amazingly young to start.

They grow up so quickly don't they?

Thank you all so much for some reassuring words, Im on my own with DS (9) and DD (7)and some of the things that come up floor me as in my mind they are still about 2yo! I don't think it was so much the smell as the manliness of it all. I might wax lyrical about how he's becoming a young man but I'm not actually ready - better had be PDQ!!!

Thanks

Minty - Yes they are growing up quicker than I was expecting!!!

DD1 is almot 10 and she has had to have a little wash under her armpits every morning and put a bit of deodorant after for about a year now. she has a shower most evenings but still needs to do it. The deodorant make it fun and grown up so she is quite happy about it! She has her own "pampering case" as well full of miniature toiletteries (the type you get for travelling or that dad brings her back from hotels when he is away for work).

What "worries" me more is that she is already starting to be spotty!

Bless them, they are growing up so fast!
