Took all the DC for vision exam today and DS needs glasses, no experience so please share yours

Have name changed as is very identifying to certain people who knew I was going to optician today (ex(stalker)MIL).

DS1 is 7 - 8 in July and had one very weak eye. He has an urgent referral letter because apparently they can only correct this up until the age of 8.

I'm so glad I took him but so regretful I didn't take him sooner.

The other two DC were fine, fortunately.

DS has chosen his frames and we collect the glasses tomorrow. He has chosen spongebob ones

I know he will be very embarrassed to wear them back to school, especially if he might need a patch later.

Poor poppet has been so unlucky this last 12 months with a broken arm and also severe urinary problems which he happens to have a scan booked for on Saturday. Hope at least that is nothing to worry about.

Anyway, anyone know much about 'lazy eye'? What are the causes, treatments, etc?

Don't know about lazy eye, but DD had to have glasses last year age 8, she only needed to wear them for distance, but after about 6 mths she wears them all day, her choice. Got a good deal, pay over £22 for one set and get a second set free from the free range. handy to have the second pair.

She hasn't had any problems at school, she is happy to wear them and was amazed at all the details in the world she was missing.

Maybe because she is a girl, but she pretty much sees them as a fashion accesory and had no breakages all year, long may that last.

We went for a check up and she needed a stronger prescription and she likes her glasses so much she got the same ones.

I don't think there's the same stigma attached to glasses these days. DS needed glasses at various times through his school life and never had any teasing or bullying because of it.

DS wore glasses from 11 mths, had refractive error probs and a squint. Could see so much better never had a problem getting him to wear his glasses though they do regularly get trashed as he bombs around the house diving into the sofas and things, dropped a pair on the railway line etc etc. You shouldn't have to pay for them (Unless you want flash lenses or frames) and when you get the NHS ones then they fix or replace them for free too.

I really didn't want him to wear specs (has other probs so it felt like the last straw) but he is really not bothered at all.

Don't be afraid to ask the optician for more details and explanations. Also the RNIB has an eye health helpline that is very good.
