Temp of 39.7

My ds1 has a temp of 39.7 degrees. He first showed a temp at about 3am this morning. I have been taking his temp throughout the day and giving him calpol and ibuprofen. It seemed to be under control mid afternoon so I stopped medicating. But now this is the reading I've just taken.
Given him more ibupreofen now.
He has been acting oddly all day, he has been very quiet, sleepy (but that may just be because he was up all night), but now he is laying on his dad, just still and quiet and he never does this.
Should I just keep checking his temp? When should I get him looked at? If at all

how old is he? Keep his meds up to the dose he can take for his age. Get him off his dad and lay him on the sofa - body heat from his dad won't be helping his temp. Strip him off and cool him down. He is sleepy because his temp is up.

Trust your instincts - if you feel you need to, call the doctor.

He is 20 months. He has his last 2 teeth breaking through at the moment. he is showing no other signs of anything serious

When we put him to bed in an hour, should I leave him in just a vest or just his pjs?

Call NHS direct and get him seen by the out of hours. They will be better at helping you then us.

I hope he's on the mend soon.

Yeah. I wanted to call them, just needed someone to tell me too. I'm always on the phone to them, am a bit paranoid you see...

I would leave him in a body suit and a sheet - do you have central heating on? Switch it low in his room or open the window a bit. Temps spike and this can cause febrile convulsions (I don't want to scare you but I'd never heard of them until my son had one, so worth reading up on effective ways to lower a temperature). Do you have a fan you leave in the room? - not on him directly but circulating cooler air.

Strip him off, down to nappy. If he wants some cover then just a thin sheet. Get him to lay on cotton sheet on sofa.

His body is doing its job and fighting infection. Have you done the usual - checked for rashes etc?

Lots of fluid...lots and lots.

When mine are that ill I keep them with me in my bed but with just a sheet.

Paranoid is OK. They won't mind. It's what they are there for. They are alot better qualified then some of the lovely people on here.

They do get hotter whilst they are asleep by the way so it's best to get him looked at now.

My DD has been exactly the same the last 2 days.

She went to out of hours and our GP also came out to us today and she has tonsilitus so I would get him seen to.|

#on the phone to nhs now, they are putting me straight through to a nurse.

I'm not medically qualified but I have experienced high temps and febrile convulsions. I hope your DS is better soon.

They said to kep a very close eye on him, put him to bed in just a nappy, make sure heating is off and room is cool and all the other normal things.
She said I could keep him in bed with me to keep a closer eye on him. To check temp again in an hour and if need be, get the doctor out. She also said to call back at any point through the night if no improvement and they could send an ambulance if need be too.
So now I am feeding the baby, going to settle him, then put ds1 in a tepid bath, and climb into bed.

We got through the night without too much distress. His temp has been up and down, but he is now very hot and shivering so I am yaking him to the doc's today.

Said my info was right - I have a 10 year old who spikes a stupidly high fever when poorly and had meningitis as a baby, so have a bit of an idea )

Thanx MSTG. And thanks for not mentioning the M word last night. God, that must have been awful for you and your family.
He can't be feeling too bad atm, he is picking at his cereal which has sat there since 6 this morning.

Because of the temp and the shivering, do I put his big coat and a nlanket on him, or do I go with a thinnner jacket to tke him out?

No, the shivering is because he has a temp. Its so hard but just a sheet for comfort.

I didnt want to mention the M word, which is why I said check for rashes, also check for "blotchy, corned beef skin". My son didnt have his rash appear til he was in the hospital, but did have the temp and lethargy and blotchy skin.

Dont EVER worry about sounding like a neurotic mother, better that than a seriously ill child.

I would keep him in if you can and open some windows for dresh air, and cry and keep his toys clean with a bit of Milton and lots of hot water.

Mostly, get lots of fluids down him. How is he today?
