Help! Urgent

Hi. My daughter (10 months) has got diarrhea and vomiting. It came on this afternoon and I now can't get her to keep any fluids down. I phoned NHS direct and they told me to keep trying with water little and often but every time I give her some she throws it up and more. So, how the hell am I meant to get her to sleep. She's obviously hungry and thirsty because she's upset and glugs at the water every time I offer it to her, but every time she has some she throws up and gets more upset. So, please help me! I need to get her to sleep!!!!

Sadly I think its a matter of waiting until shes so tired she just gives up and goes to sleep

If she's not better tommorrow go the the drs

(dd had this on Thursday and was fine by Friday)

Looking after a baby with D&V is tiring and hard work but it will be over soon then she will sleep loads and therefore you will sleep more too (hopefully) chances are it will stop in the next few hours and you can both get cleaned up and some rest.

try to get some diorylite from a late night chemist

if you thnink she is becoming dehydrated then you need to call your GP's out of hours service

is she bf or ff - you can continue breastfeeds, if not offer little(less than a teaspoon) and often of water or clear fluids (ie very diluted juice)or get soem rehyration sachets from chemist and offer that.

too much water when in this state will result in it all coming up again

small sips is best
but if she is not better by the morning take her back to the docs, you have to watch out for dehydration with little ones

when my dd was in that state as a baby we used to put just a couple of teaspoons of water in a beaker and let her drink it, if you put more in she will gulp it and bring it all up. We let her have a few sips every 15 mins.

Thanks ladies. Eventually managed to get her to sleep about an hour ago. I don't for a minute think we're going to have a good night but I'm just glad she's asleep for now. Thanks for the tips, I think she was having too much water which was making her sick, I'll try the little sips thing, although I know she won't be happy about it! Hopefully we'll get some sleep and she'll be on the way to recovery in the morning.

I think under one's should only go 24 hours without fluids.

Hi Lovemygirls. Thank you for asking. She's been ok-ish today. She still couldn't keep even water down so took her to the docs and got some dioralyte. She's had a bottle and half of that over the day, and 4oz milk and gone down to sleep. Fingers crossed for a better night than last night and will try to get back on milk tomorrow.

Hmm, spoke too soon! She woke up about 10 and threw up the milk she'd had earlier. Was waking up throughout the night but wouldn't take any more water or Dioralyte. This morning she's had some dioralyte but is very sleepy and weak. If she manages to keep it down I'm going to try her with a couple of ounces of milk and see how she goes. Its heartbreaking to see her so drowsy, she's normally full of beans and tires me out!

if she is drowsy, she needs seeing.......tis a sign of dehydration.

my DD3 used to get like this. I used to give a syringe full of fluids (whichever I chose at the time.....BM, dioralyte ect) every 15mins. JUST a syringe full tho.....any more and she was sick.

I do think tho you need to take her in to be checked over tho.....

My son got like this at 10mo with D&V - Dr gave me fantastic advice that kept us out of hospital (was touch and go) - 1floz diralyte every 10mins. No more. If it bounces, try again in 10mins. But only 1floz. It was heartbreaking to take the beaker away from him as he wanted more - but it meant that most of it stayed down and he started to rehydrate. Don't worry about milk or anything else to start with - just the diralyte. Hope things improve soon.
