Does a child's temperature increase at night???

DS has not been great over the past few days. DH took him to the GP yesterday and she reckons he has a chest infection. Sounds about right with a bit of coughing, raised temp, irritability, and tiredness.

Bit of confusion with picking up the antibiotices last night, i fetched it this morning but DS seemed lots better so i did not start the medication today.

However, DS's temperature seemed to shoot up tonight - not dangerously so, but very quickly once he went to sleep.

Dumb question following [warning!!]: do children's temperatures increase markedly once they fall asleep or could the increase be due to the infection? He has been coughing a bit but he's okay. I have given him 10ml calpol. I am not averse to him gettin antibiotics, but I thought seeing that he appeared to be okay today, i would give them a miss. now I wonder if I was wrong in doing so.

Please if the GP has given the antibs use them. I have been ill with a low level chest thing for nearly 6 weeks. When I went on the antibs I felt so enormously much better it wasn't true. I had no idea how much I was suffering until I took them, and I'm a grown up.

I think but am no expert, that temp goes up through the day so is highest at bedtime and sleep will help it go down gradually through the night.

My dd's temp always goes up at night, almost as soon as she's asleep. I think it's normal. It's also higher in an evening than in a morning.

thanks for replies! i think i will start the medication tomorrow. Mrsgb, I think DS's infection is similarly low level, as you say about yours. and he really has not been great for about two weeks.
Showofhands, I was wondering if temp increased at night. Seems to be the case!
thanks for the help.
DS is asleep and calm right now, thankfully.
