my little boy woke up this morning with a red upper eyelid like he had been rubbing it. He has just woken up and it is really swollen. Any ideas what it could be?

Is it hot?

leoemma · 27/03/2009 21:40

a little bit yes. Hes dropped off on the sofa now. am wondering if it could be bacterial as he has had a cold and last time he had a cold got conjunctivitis.

It sounds alot like periorbital cellulitis. This does need treating very quickly as it spreads if it is this. You can either call NHS direct, get him seen tonight by the out of hours and see what they say or bypass this, take him to your local childrens emergency at the hospital and let them check it out. The treatment for cellulitis is normally IV antibiotics so it really does need looking at by a doctor.

I hope he's OK

I've seen this before, I trained as a paeds nurse for nearly three years, it does sound like cellulitis so it really does need looking at.

leoemma · 27/03/2009 21:53

4 hr wait for nhs direct to ring back as though dont think its urgent!

Tell them it sounds like periorbital cellulitis, it won't be a 4 hour wait then.

scrooged · 27/03/2009 21:56

The was for NHS direct, not you.

scrooged · 28/03/2009 15:35

How's the eye?

scrooged · 28/03/2009 20:35

bump

scrooged · 30/03/2009 15:06

Hope he's OK.

scrooged · 31/03/2009 21:34

Still bumping.

phoebebouffet · 08/04/2009 21:58

Yes I'd like to bump because I woke up with a swollen eyelid this morn, interested to know how lo is, hope he is ok x

Agree with scrooged!

My dd had this, i thought it might be result of insect bite, but doctor took one look at her and said she had to have antibiotics immediately or she'd be in hospital - it can be really serious around the eye as the tissue swells.

hope you got it sorted out.
