Almost 4 yr old and sling

DS2 broke his collar bone last Monday (16th) (tripped over own feet when running ) and has had to have his arm in a sling since then.

The consultant said he should keep it on for 2 weeks, but he also said that children this age 'self regulate' and so if he removes the sling and is using his arm comfortably after the 2 weeks then let him be.

Problem I have is that he has been using his arm with no problems for about 4 days (has not had the need for pain killers for about 6 days). This is after I have put his arm in the sling, walked off to attend to his brother and have come back to find he has slipped his arm out of the sling and is playing using the arm.

DH says that I have to keep putting his arm back in the sling (which I have been doing), but he just uses that arm anyway.

Should I just permanently remove the sling or insist that he wear it until next Monday?

I am sorry I have no idea.

However on first reading of the thread title I thought you meant a baby type sling and I was coming on here to tell you to get grip before you wrecked your back.

Me too bree! I was really shocked and was going to roundly berate you

Umm ... am a bit confused though - did the consultant say that children that age self-regulate but only after 2 weeks? That seems a bit odd. Are you sure he didn't say that he recommends that your DS wear the sling for 2 weeks but that as children that age self-regulate, he might stop using it earlier?

Me too - was just about to say make the lazy bugger walk!

Would have made for a more interesting thread! Is there another word for 'sling' as in medical thingy? Have been making poor DS2 walk to DS1's school since he was about 2.5.

I suppose that's where I am confused, spicemonster. The consultant said he should wear it for at least 2 weeks.
I am tempted to just let him go without it but was not sure if anyone had any experience as to why he should wear it regardless for 2 weeks.

There's not even a telephone number for the fracture clinic on the appointment card so can't call.
