dd1 has suspected breast cyst - need some advice

dd1 (15) has had problems with one of her breasts being larger than than the other for about a year.

We have been to three doctors who have all put it down to her age and natural development.

We finally decided something had to be done when she was experiencing sweating from the one armpit and a discharge from the nipple, accompanied with pain and heat from the affected breast.

The doctor we saw said that it there is something there, more than likely a water filled cyst and she now has an appointment with the hospital on Tuesday. They will be carrying out an ultra-sound, draining off some of the fluid for testing, doing a biopsy and draining off the fluid if necessary, all on the same day.

If anyone has any experience of this, could you tell me if these procedures are painful and could you put my mind at rest that it is unlikely that, considering her age, anything more sinister will be found?

Gibberish, a friend of mine once told me a long time ago that she had had a cyst in her breast in her teens. She had a biopsy and the "water filled cyst" ( same description) removed at the local hospital using a needle again this was all done on the same day - sounds so familiar. She told me that it hurt but was not horrendous (very embarassing to her because of where the cyst was)and she had no further problems from that point onwards - b/fed her children etc. Thats all i've got i'm afraid, hope its reassuring in some way and best wishes to your daughter.

Update...

dd1 saw consultant at the hospital today. Turns out she does not have a water-filled cyst. She has a giant juvenile fibroadenoma which is a benign (thankfully) solid tumour.

It is so large (8cm) that it is taking up almost the entire breast and she has very little breast tissue. This means that she has to have surgery to remove it and they will then have to go on to do reconstructive surgery when she is slightly older to rebuild the breast

I am just upset that this was not identified earlier. The first time she saw a doctor about it was when she was 12, three years ago (not 1 as stated earlier, can't believe it has actually been that long!) and each time she has attended a doctor during this period she has mentioned it but always been told it was developmental.

To those who have teen daughtes, I just wanted you to be aware that this condition exists and if your dd experiences similar symptoms just bear it in mind as a possible, albeit a rare, cause.

dd is fine atm. Don't think it will hit her until she has actually had the op because she can't really imagine what it will be like. That's what I think anyway.

There will be counsellors available for her and one of my very good friends has had a mastectomy and is more than willing to give her support and advice which is a relief. Just feel so sad that she has to go through this at such a young age

Absolutely. She is very young indeed. But the young are often very resilient so I guess you need to take her lead.
