Keeping food down (d&V)

How long would you leave it before getting worried. Ds2 (4) and dd(2) have both had d&v more v than d for a few days now and neither of them are keeping much down. I'm not even sure if the waters staying down now. I know ds hasn't weed at all today. DDs nappy is pretty dry. They both have slightly raised temps but paracetemol won't stay down either. When should I start getting worried and what should I do?

I'd be ringing the doctor for advice now to be honest.

how many days and how old are they?

Mine have just had this, the 5yo was sick for 2 days and then Ok, the 1yo was sick for about 5 days, he was keeping some breastmilk down but not reliably.

They said worry if he starts being very sleepy, hasn't weed for several hours, has no tears when he cries or the skin on his hand takes a second or two to fall back when you gently pinch.

You could try sips of dioralyte, or sucking lollies instead of drinking.

They also told me to give a teaspoon of water every few mins rather than letting them gulp

Small and often is more likely to stay down iyswim. It's horrid, sympathy from here.

DS1 has had this all week - here is the Dr's advice we were given:

The main worry is dehydration - if you think they are not keeping water down you need a Dr to see them.

TINY sips of water every 30 secs to 1 min. Not a big drink as that comes straight back up. When DS was bad we had to wake him every hour one night for some water (it was that or hospital)
Anything they want to eat or drink goes - even milk apparently (some children become lactose intolerant while sick, but not that many and if they want it it is OK)
Probiotic drinks are good - sipped.
Give up on food if nothing is staying down - you don't want them to be sick after eating and bring up all the fluids they have had.

He did this thing where he pushed DS's forehead with his thumb, and it took a while for the skin to firm back up and that meant he was dehydrated. He said if DS didn't manage a wee in the next 3 hours then he had to go to hospital.

Hope you can get to a Dr easy enough and your DCs are feeling better soon, we are 5 days in and DS not been sick today so we may finally be getting through it.

Ds1 whos 5 has already had it. He had a day of being sick etc then a day of looking awful and no hes seems a lot better. I'll talk to Dh when he gets home.

I think the fact that I'm questioning it means I'm getting worried and I tend not to be a fusser

if you tend not to fuss then get them seen.

I have a feeling it might be a rotavirus. Apparently nearly everyone has it by the age of 5, adults are normally immune, and the worst episode is the first, subsequent doses tend to be lighter. Which would fit with the older ones being less ill iyswim.

Half ds1's class have had it but most of them just sick once or so.

The fact that your 4yr old hasn't passed urine all day would worry me. Have you tried giving water on a teaspoon?

They asked me about the weeing, and tbh ds1 only usually bothers to go once or twice a day, so I wasn't worried. But it depends on your mother's instinct. Sleepyness is a sign of dehydration. But I'm usually less worried if their temp isn't that high.

dd seems to be a little better though ds is still very lethargic I'm not so worried. I'll keep an eye on them

ikwym, it can feel like a massive responsibility being alone with ill children. Hope they are better really soon and you can relax xx
