ear infections - gunk

My dd aged 5 has an ear infection and has been given antibiotics for the last four days but the gunk is still coming out of her ear. Is this normal. Also she has a probiotic drink every morning. Could this be reacting with the antibiotics?

Don't know about the probiotic drink.

Does she has a temperature? is she in pain?

My dd1 has gunk coming out of her ears for several days after the actual infection had cleared up - this could be what's happening with your dd, and that's normal. But if she has pain/temperature/can't hear properly, then take her back to the gp.

she has no temp and seems fine but just very gunky can I wash her ears to get rid of the gunk?

no I wouldn't wash her ears. Water can introduce more infection into the ear. Just wipe the gunk away from the outside of the ear.

No the probiotic shouldn't make a difference - in fact it's probably a good thing for her to have, as all the good bacteria in her tummy will have been wiped out by the ab's as well as the bad.

You could also get some childrens Acidophilus from a health food store, which is another way of building up all the good bacteria. I've found that when myself or DD have had ab's, we've always been run down afterwards and these can help.

And do as Belgo says.

Ear infections are horrible I hope she feels better soon.

P.S. Below is something i copied and pasted from a website - hope it helps.

"If there is discharge from the ear, this usually means that the ear drum has perforated. The ear drum usually heals completely, but sometimes a course of antibiotic ear drops is helpful to clear up the discharge"
