Chicken pox with a pinprick red rash too

Has anyone else had a child who got an extra rash whilst they had chicken pox? DS2 got his first pox spots 7 days ago, although the main crop only came out on about Wednesday. No real problems - mild temp, bit crabby, spots have scabbed over within hours. However yesterday he got another rash - pinprick size red/purple dots which didn't blanch. Was very worried and on advice of NHS Direct went to A&E. They said it was just a viral rash, probably associated with the chicken pox, but nothing to worry about since DS2 was jumping around everywhere well in himself.

Just wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience?

we have a particularly nasty strain of chicken pox in our pre-school, about 2/3s have had them now and lots of them have had the pinprick rash too, mostly on their faces
a couple of children have had chicken pox for the second time and a couple of children have come out in that warty virus thing too

Just wanted to come back to this and repost, as this developed further over the weekend. On Saturday morning DS2 started to get bruises all over, not in areas where he normally bruised. My sister was looking after him at the time, and after calling the out of hours GP, an ambulance was sent (suspected meningitis). Again, after a few hours we were sent home, with a diagnosis of 'something to do with the chickenpox'.

Sunday morning found me on Google trying to look for connections between bruising and chickenpox and I came up with ITP or Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The symptoms matched perfectly with DS2 - virus (chickenpox), pin prick rash which was actually pin-prick bleeding under the surface of the skin, bruising and nosebleeds. I rang A&E and they said to ring the out of hours GP again. Out of hours GP said to come in so we did.

After he'd been seen by the GP, they rang the paediatric ward, and referred us up there. They did blood tests, but they didn't come back right, so they repeated them. Turned out they'd been right the first time, his platelet count wasn't just low, but zero. My internet diagnosis of ITP was correct!

We've now got to go for daily blood tests until he returns to normal levels which could take weeks or months. Unfortunately our holiday is now cancelled Just wanted to post in case anyone else ever comes across my OP with the same symptoms. INSIST on a blood test!

Blimey - I'm sorry your ds and you are having to go through this but well done on finding the answer your self. (not that you should have had to)

My son is just getting over chicken pox and has developed a pinprick rash over his tummy and sides (underarms). He's fine in himself but I worry what the rash is?
