Ds temperature over 100 for 2 days, any idea what it could be?

Ds was sent home ftrom nursery on Tuesday due to a high temp. I took him to the GP in Wednesday because it stayed up and a few weeks back he had tonsilitis which started the same way. She checked his ears, throat and chest but couldn't find anything and said I should give him nurofen and calpol alternately to bring his temp down, but to take him back if I was worried. Throughout today he has had temps of 101 - 103 and although the drugs bring it down, it goes back up after about an hour. I rang the GP for advice and they said it was a cause for concern and that I should see the out of hours GP as they couldn;t see him this eve. The out of hours GP gave me a right telling off and said I should've gone to my own GP and why hadn't I?
He said that I could take ds there (out of hours), but that they wouldn't do anything except perhaps send us to A&E, so I might as well go back to my own GP tomorrow.
Ds is asleep, but moaning a bit and hot. WHen he wakes he says he is cold and shivers.
ANy ideas what this could be?

I would keep very close eye and cool him down - starve that fever. Take to GP ASAP in morning. Do not let them fob you off.

If not, take to A and E

I too would take a trip back in the morning or pop to A&E if you need to. I used to train as a childrens nurse, this is called a PUO (pyrexia of unknown origin) so needs investigating with blood tests and urine tests etc.

Do call NHS direct if you need him to be seen before tomorrow. The medication you were advised to give should help.

I would take him in now - I've always found out of hours services to be helpful

There's been a lot of strep/scarlet fever 'round these parts....

MrsMopple · 12/03/2009 22:30

Hav ejust taken his temp again - it's 'only' 99.8 now, so maybe he'll have a better night than last night.
mp - our out of hours are usually excellent, I must've just got the mardy GP this evening. AM off to research scarlet fever.
scrooged - with PUO, what can they actually do? How many days of high temp are considered ok medically?

They run through all the tests to try and find out what's causing it and monitor whilst giving ibuprofen and paracetamol to reduce it. It depends on the age of the child as to how long is OK medically, they don't want to see a baby under 4 months with a fever at all, they don't like PUO's at any age.

Scarlet fever starts as a really high fever, headache, sore throat, then they get a purple/pink tongue and a pink rash. Then the skin/tongue starts to peel. It's also known as strep throat, treated with 10 days of penicillin or other antibiotic.

MrsMopple · 12/03/2009 22:39

I suppose it could be scarlet fever, then. WIll wait and see of he develops a rash, but there's nothing visible as yet. Thanks for your advice

It happens quite quickly, it's more or a pink rash. ds had this, the rash was gone in a few hours. I didn't think it was scarlet fever, I just took him to the GP because I'd not seen the rash before.

morningpaper · 12/03/2009 23:05

I would take him down now, he sounds poorly

It should be quiet at this time of night

I went on CHRISTMAS NIGHT with a child at 1 a.m. and was back home in 20 minutes with a full lot of urine and tests done - it was no trouble at all

MrsMopple · 13/03/2009 14:07

It was tonsilitis again. Took ds to the Drs this morning and saw a different GP (the one we saw on Weds is LOVELY, but not the best clinician from past experience).
Different antibiotic, again for a week. The trouble is this one (penecillin) tastes awful and I'm not sure how we're going to get it down ds 4x a day for the next week! Even the usual chocolate bribe didn't work earlier!
