DD just chewed a daffodil

My DD who is 11months has just chewed a daffodil stem and Ive just read that they have poison in them. What should I do? Obv I'll keep an eye on her for a temp, sickness etc, but is there anything I should do?

I would ring NHS Direct for advice.

I'd second the adviceto ring NHS Direct. I did exactly this when my dd ate a plant and they gave me excellent advice.

My cat did this and had to go to the vet and was kept in.

The bulb is the most poisonous part - not sure about the stems.

Ring NHS Direct. They may have access to a database of poisonous plants and chemicals.

I just went on and there is a self help bit for poisoning.

Ive just called NHS24 and Im waiting on them calling me back. Im not really that worried about it, but thats the last time I let her in the garden! Im am slightly embarressed about it actually, I cant believe how fast she grabbed it and started to chew it.

The stem won't do her any harm, it's the bulb you need to watch for. Give her plenty of fluids if you're really concerned and honestly don't worry about it. If she'd ate a whole bunch then yeah, panic away! But a gnaw on one wee stem won't do her any harm.

Would I be right in assuming she abandoned it once she got the taste?

It's only the bulb that is poisionous, don't worry.

I called Nhs 24 who said its all of the plant that is poisionous(its the fluid inside the plant that has the poision in it) She had chewed the stem which had liquid in it, and NO she didnt stop eating it she was quite happy to munch away. They said I had to take her to A&E all a bit ott IMHO but off we went, and we are not long back, they just made us sit there until it had been 4hrs since she had eaten it..then as there was no signs we were sent home.

The whole drive on the way over was more stressful than anything else, as I only passed my driving test on Friday and was my first drive with just me and DD in the car. But there you go never a dull day in our household.

God sorry I feel terrible now, it was my Grandad who always said it was only the bulb, as my Mum used to eat daffodils when she was a toddler!

Once when ds was about 18 mo I rang NHS direct as I suspected he may have eaten half a paracetamol, and we had to do the same 4 hour wait, sometimes I think they err hugely on the side of caution.

Glad your dd is fine though and congrats on the driving test.

Dont worry about it, she's fine and now I'll know not to let her near the daffodils in future.

God NHS24 really know how to terrify you! I don't know if they'll have mentioned to you but the poison in daffodils is actually a very strong emetic - that is, it would have made her vomit which in itself is a defence mechanism.

Glad to hear she's okay today though

My boy (7) just ate a whole daffodil flower - about 4 hours ago. Should he be ok now??

I work for NHS Direct and we have to go with what TOXBASE - part of national poisons information service - say. I know its a bind but you would all be baying for blood if we said dont worry and they had a convulsion!!
