DD diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia - Dislocated Hip

My DD is 22 months and just diagnosed with a dislocated hip. The consultant in Hastings - Conquest Hospital said she definately needs surgery and will be in a cast thereafter. I am obviously very very upset and very very anxious. Has anyone had the same experience?

I don't personally, but a couple of very good friends had the same experience when their DD was about 20 months. They were obviously anxious about the surgery, the plastercast and long-term recovery, but she was brilliant.

The cast didn't seem to bother her at all and she recovered really well. She is now 9 and, other than a scar, you would never know she's had it done. She recently went to Australia and now proudly tells people that the scar is from a shark bite!

I hope someone with personal experience comes along to give you more info, but hopefully this reassures you a bit.

moneytree, I'm sorry to hear yo'ure going through this - we thought we'd be doing it too with dd2 at the same age, and I was pretty anxious too. Her hip turned out ok in the end, so never had the experience - but did some research and talked to a friend whose dd (now 5) had the op after an initial cast at 9 months didn't sort her hip out. She was 20 months, and had just started walking, IIRC. Anyway, her Mum said the same thing - she coped fine, learnt to walk again very fast afterwards, and is one of the best swimmers, runners, and everything else I know now!

I also came across a website specially for kids with feet/leg problems called Steps - you could check it out if you wanted to, they have message boards with a whole section devoted to parents with kids with hip dysplasia. I'm useless at links, but if you Google it you'll find it.

Just over a year ago, when my daughter, Siomha was 14 months old, we noticed that she seemed to limp when she walked. I cannot convey how shocked we were to find out that her hip was dislocated and that her condition was on the severe end of the scale. Last September she had major reconstructive surgery at Great Ormond Street on her hip socket using part of her pelvis bone. She spent 7 weeks in a cast covering 70% of her body.

We have been back for her review last week and were given the bad news that her hip socket is possibly showing continuing bone death (AVN) due to insufficient blood supply. Her future regarding how much mobility she will gain is uncertain.

On the positive side I can say that without STEPs and the families who are on forums to support each other our situation would be too awful. I am not ashamed to admit that there have been days that I have cried for hours but I can always contact my STEPS family and pick myself up. We have been blessed with a beautiful baby girl and are lucky to be so supported!

That is very late to be diagnosed.

DD3 was born with CDH and she was monitored for several months. The condition corrected by itself, and she was given the all-clear before she was 6 months.

I am mum to Siomha born 26/1/2007 - At 14 months (yes MONTHS) she was diagnosed with a dislocated hip (Developmental Dysplasia of the hip) and her hip socket had not formed at the dislocation had been from birth. She was operated on in Great Ormond Street for 7 hours last September. Her surgeon created a new socket from her pelvis.

Please sign a non political petition which is encouraging the Department of Health to meet with late diagnosed parents so ensure what happened to Siomha is rare.

I am absolutely delighted that your daughters hip was detected and as importantly TREATED early - as this is key.
