neocate formula for reflux baby

Hi there my lo 16 week has reflux. Was prescribed neocate formula 1 week ago. She is now constipated does anyone know is this due to the neocate. Incidently it doesn't seem to be helping with the reflux if anything she is now bringing more back up than ever. Would appreciate any feedback thanks.

Hi, sorry I don't know about neocate but my 16 week old has reflux too. You might find the answer here or here?

My DD is on renitadine, domperidone and baby gaviscon and has been seeing a cranial osteopath for 6 weeks... and she's still vomiting and unhappy I suspect your formula thickens the milk, the gaviscon does this and makes my DD constipated. The doc said he'd prescribe lactulose if it got too bad but she's not crying when she passes stools. You could also give her some cool boiled water for the constipation?

I've gone dairy-free from today beause I'm bf ing and I've heard it can help.

Anyway, I've not been much help but you're not alone!!!

thanks for your reply honeymoonmummy. The neocate is a hypoallergenic formula just in case the reflux was caused by a cows milk intolerance. It is actually a lot thinner than the previous formula we were using. I was also using gaviscon but as she is constipated have stopped using for the last couple of days. The next thing the pead doctor suggested if the neocate shows no improvement is a medication called zantec. Which i think reduces the stomach acid. Do you know if any of the medications actually stop the vomiting. Did you find the osteopath made any improvement? My main concern is that sometimes when the acid is coming back up it is causing my lo to choke which i am finding really scary.

Zantac is renitadine. Do a search for renitadine. You'll find it's worked for some but not others (including my DD so far, she's been on that and domperidone for 2 weeks today). I think it might take a bit longer for the gaviscon to leave their system before the constipation stops and domperidone actually takes them the other way, altho DD on both is constipated.

I know the osteo has worked for other people with reflux babies. If you are near Manchester or London there is a charitable osteo organisation which just ask for a contribution of whatever you can afford, say £10 - bit cheaper.

The zantac does reduce the stomach acid and the domperidone is supposed to make the food empty the stomacxh more quickly as I understand it. My docc says as long as she's not crying when passing stools then the constipation is not a reason to stop/ reduce the gaviscon.

When you say "paed doctor" - have you seen a gastro-paedriatrician? We did, but I went private because I would have had to wait 4 weeks as the (GP) doc wouldn't prescribe ren and dom, but I know other docs do.

Hi - I know this is a little old but just wanted to join in! My 9 week old has reflux and I took her to see a private paediatrician on Wednesday and he immediately put her on neocate, which started on Friday. On Friday she was bringing up everything I fed her - it was quite upsetting as it seemed to be even more than normal and was thick and mucousy. I have been a bit under the weather so I think it might actually have been that she was also feeling ill and had a lot of mucous, casuing her to be sick a lot. Although it might not have been! I don't want to tempt fate but since then she seems to be bringing up a lot less...But it is a lot thinner so perhaps use a thickener such as carobel (although that won't help with the cosntipation)

Anyway she now hasn't done a poo since Saturday evening and am starting to think she might be constipated as she seems uncomfortable and suddenly starts crying. I have just given her a 3oz bottle of boilled water and a tiny bit of brown sugar which should help. She hasn't eaten a huge amount in the past two days, possibly due to feeling unwell (I am the same) - about 19/20 oz per 24hrs when I believe for her weight and age she should be eating at least 25oz. I also find she eats less when constipated (she had it terribly when I tried her on enfamil as it was thickened) as I think it all "backs up" and compresses the stomach so they can't fit as much in.

So maybe try boled water - 4oz with half a teaspoon of brown sugar, or another thing I do is soak 4 prunes in (still hot) boiled water and let it cool - you can leave them to soak overnight, then give it to her in a bottle or on a spoon - it's not as concentrated as normal prune juice (for obvious reasons!).

Oooh I also have taken her twice to a cranial osteopath - actually the last time was on friday morning so that could also have contributed to all the sick as it might have "unlocked her stomach".

Gosh sorry to ramble on - hope some of this helps/is of interest - am off now to see if she will poo as she isn't sleeping well as a result...the glamour!

My daughter has been the same way, she is 8 weeks and has been crying and crampy since about 5 weeks ago, I handled it for about 2 weeks then when she started waking up at 1am and not going back to bed till 5-6am that was enough, I couldn't deal with the constant crying and screaming when drinking her bottle and afterwards. SO i brought her into emerge I waited for 8 hours to get an appt with a ped. They also prescribed Ran and DOm but that wasnt enough it hadn't changed her a bit so they prescribed her something stronger called lansoprazole.

My LO started vomitting, fussing and screaming at around 3 months, took her to the GP and told him I suspected silent reflux....he prescribed gaviscon. The Gaviscon calmed the symptoms for a week or so but then all returned so i took my LO to our peadiatrition (had seizures from birth so already seeing one). He prescribed rinitdine which also worked only for a short while. My LO is now on Dom peridone and Omeprozole and still has all the signs....PH Probe showed no acid but barium swallow showed that she DEF IS refluxing her milk.....My LO is now 7 months old and we have started her on Neocate LCP and a dairy free diet(as weaning)but she is that constipated and upset that I'm not sure if its working or not. The pead Dr says next step is endoscopy....but I just dont know what to do anymore I feel so tired of the whole thing!
Please let me know what you think as its so nice to hear from others who understand!

I totally understand how you feel. I feel I am at breaking point. My baby was 5 weeks prem, reflux since birth, progressively getting worse and just can't get her settled or to feed comfortably. She is on ranitidine, domperidone, carobel thickener, omeprazole and now neocate formula. What else can be done. How are things now with you?
