Nappy rash, looks like sunburn

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this...my little one has nappy rash,it looks just like sunburn and is hot to the touch.

She looked a bit sore yesterday so I put sudocrem on but it seemed to make it ten times worse. Since then I have used weleda nappy change cream, loads of nappy free time and switched from nature baby care nappies to pampers which has made it a little better but not much. She was teething last week and pooing loads but I was managing to keep the rash at bay with sudocrem but now the tooth is through the rash has just got so much worse. Could it be thrush?

Our bunny had this too, also around the teething stage. I think it's just that the skin gets a bit scorched by an acidic poo and that takes a couple of days to fully come up red.

It went away after a day or so, no problem - yours will probably do the same!

It could be thrush possibly an allergy if I were you I cannot reccomend a product called metanium it stinks and is messy but is fab.

nickschick · 24/02/2009 18:25

reccomend enough it should read

SlightlyMadScotland · 24/02/2009 18:26

Metanium is IMHO the best nappy rash treatment.

It could be thrush, particulalry as it isn't going away now the tooth is through (mine all had 24hr nappy rash as they cut their teeth...but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared as soon as tooth had broken the surface) - whcih you will need to treat with clotrimazole (ask for a cream for nappy thrush at chemist and they will sort it).

The other thing that just strikes me from your description - although unlikely - could it be Scarlet fever. That is often described as "sunburnt rash" and tends to dominate the warm folds of skin such as armpits, thighs and nappy area. It virtually always follows a sore throat.

sounds like thrush and nappy rash.
I've used canesten cream mixed in with sudocream for this and it worked very well.

VaginaShmergina · 24/02/2009 18:27

Agree with the rest of the metanium fan club. We put it on teething bottoms that were bleeding and it sorted them out.

dancingonmice · 24/02/2009 18:35

Thanks for all the replies. I'm slightly scaredto put anything on her as the sudocrem really seemed to make her so sore but as metanium gets recommendations I might give is a go.

How long do allergies take to develop. She hadn't had anything new to eat for 48 hours, or can they suddenly become allergic to something they already had? She's 8 months.

SHe got a tooth coming through? I always found mine got a bad nappy rash when they had a tooth coming through.

SlightlyMadScotland · 24/02/2009 18:40

If she has thrush the ONLY way it will get better is anti-fungals like clotriomazole (canestan).

They can become allergic to things they were previously fine with. But I have never heard of nappy rash being the only sign of an allergy...although happy to be proved wrong.

dancingonmice · 24/02/2009 18:47

The top of the tooth has broken through. The rash got worse after it had come through. How can I tell if it is thrush? Just of it does not improve?

pretty much.

Thrush can be a bit blotchy and or pimply.

Thrush is actually v v v common and often not diagnosed or treated properly.

dancingonmice · 24/02/2009 19:03

Not pimply but very blotchy. will see how it is tomorrow

Id be inclined if the rash isnt worse to try metanium and give it 2 days then go to docs if no better - with regards to allergy it could be that other symptoms are misconstrued as teething probs and so you dont always pick up on it straight away.

Metanium again is FAB. But I would also use Timodene from GP as it treats a spectrum of nappy rash causes.

i agree with lots of people here , my baby had severe nappy rash and sudo cream was not helping at all, the rash turned nasty and started to bleed a bit. someone told me to try metanium , used it for a day and the next day it had nearly gone. best nappy rash cream ever, pity its not more widely advertised as id never heard of it before a friend told me.
Can anyone help with this one
my baby is 9 months old and has developed a rash exactly like sunburn and feels hot to touch on her neck and back she has not been out in sun. i first noticed it about 4 hours ago and just checked her and the rash has spread slightly to around behind her ear. she has no fever or sickness and seems fine in herself and the rash dissapears when pushed down , she has has no new food or new baby products used on her, will take to doctors if gets worse or she gets ill but just wondered if anyone baby has had this and what it is
