Newborn with severe reflux, in and out of hospital with dehydration/weight loss

Hi, wonder if anyone can advise on this. One of my friend's lo has had severe reflux since two weeks of age. He is losing weight and was in hospital all last week for rehydration.

They have checked for stena whatsit, not that.

He has been bf and the hospital have helped a lot with this, but she is struggling becasue it takes him so long ot feed and he is so distressed throughout.

She would like to bf, but her current worry is the weight loss and his continual vomiting/posseting. He is now well below his birht weight, having put weight on quite well in his second week of life.

OK going to suggest that she cuts out all dariy from her diet and see how that goes, DS used to vomit very badly and was also disgnosed with reflux, vomiting didn't stop until he went onto a soya formula, he also has gaviscon to help. It completely changed hime. This may not be the problem but may be worth a try.

Thanks fivego.
If she is going for formula, is it worth asking her doc about lactose free?

Have the hospital not given her any advice/treatment such as gaviscon?

My DS1 had 'stena whatsit' so I completely sympathise with her - the continual vomiting is absolutely awful and really ruined my first few weeks with DS1.

Yes, they have tried every antacid known to man but to no avail.

Poor thing.

Get her to go to GP and get her to make the suggestion that baby may be airy intolerant, we use C&G Infasoy but I know others on here have been prescribed Neocate, that is if she wants to change from BF to FF.

Has baby being checked for Pyloric Stenosis. One of my past maternity nurse charges had this and Doctors thought it was reflux as PS does not usually show until after six weeks - my little charge showed signs from day 11. He had a small operation and then gained weight steadily.

Nannynz - I assumed that is what the OP was referring to by saying 'stena whatsit' - my DS1 had it too

Oh yes probably so. My little charged had three ultrasounds before diagnosed the muscle just was closing up slowly that why it didn't show are first. It was pretty scary at the time!

Thanks for all the input, ladies.
I have passed on all your info to her.
They are back off to hospital tomorrow. Hopefully the poor wee thing will be better soon. He looks so fragile.
