Single mumps vaccine - availability?

Have decided to vaccinate DD with mumps jab. We have moved area since she had the measles jab, so will not be using the same clinic. I have rung a clinic in Bath who inform me that there is a shortage of the vaccine as the manufacturer has indefinitely stopped producing it.

Has anyone else's DC had the mumps vaccine recently and know of anywhere that may have a supply? If so, I now live in the South and am prepared to travel.

Thx.

We are also wondering what we are going to do. We have paid for our vaccine already. DH will be phoning on Monday.

The clinic we take DD to for her single jabs has said apparently the mumps vaccine will be made again from this summer. They are going to let us know.

Nabster and iwnnH, thx for responses. Are the clinics you use in the south? I'd like to put DD on a couple of waiting lists.

Yes, SE.

We are the same as Nabster we paid in advance for our vaccines and was told last September when we had our first vaccine that they expected the mumps vaccine to be available in April. I checked out their website yesterday and it says that the manufacturer Merck are not making any more vaccine and it may be as late as the end of the year I don't know what to do now as I really dont want to wait another year before my little one is covered!

mumps is a mild disease. Measles and rubella are important diseases to be vaccinated against, and mumps is important to be immune to once you hit puberty but it is generally a very mild disease for children. It causes sterility, rarely, in people who get mumps post puberty. So personally i don't think waiting a few months is that bad.

Has anyone got an update on the single mumps vaccine? I have just phoned my clinic and the lady said they might start making it at the end of the year?!

Hiya I am in a predicament with this one too. Had ds done who is now 3 but dont know what to do about dd. dh doesnt know either. contemplating going for MMR. I actually had mumps myself recently or so docs said.

Very confused!!?

Our clinic says they dont have any and dont know when they will. Advised either to have MMR or to have other two then see if available when time for mumps and if not have the mmr as well?!

stuffitllllama · 04/11/2009 16:36

Sounds like an awful lot of vaccination shots MrsNetz. That would be three shots of measles and rubella in three years if they have the pre-school booster. Are the vaccinations really that crappy that they need that many in such close succession?

(well I think so but it seems your clinic does too if they are recommending that schedule)

MrsNetz · 03/03/2010 18:48

I've finally decided dd had mmr and she is fine. I thought that was for the best rather than so many injections. I bit the bullet and made decision against dh and mils thoughts.
Ds is fine x

Seona1973 · 26/10/2010 15:38

from googling, merck are not planning on resuming production so it is not expected that there will be any mumps vaccines in the foreseeable future

PennyOne · 26/10/2010 15:59

Thank you, was hoping there may have been something in the pipeline by now Pen
