Blood in poo...

My dd is 21 months. A few weeks ago her nursery saved a nappy for us to see as it had blood in the poo. Obviously they see a lot of poos, so I was worried, and took her to teh doctor. As I didn't have the poo though, the doc was quite dismissive (understandably, I suppose). Since then, she's been finer. Although I do struggle to get enough fruit and veg into her, she does have some (and always some peas or sweetcorn if nothing else!)

This morning, she has done a very bloody poo again. All poos have been fine recently, so this is out of the blue. I can't take her to the docs this morning, but I will tomorrow (though it would mean taking time off work and missing nursery - otherwise I'd have to wait until Thursday).

In teh meantime though - anyone else have experience? There is blood running all through the poo and staining teh nappy. DD fine in herself... but...

Is it bright red? If it is, it's most likely a superficial anal tear caused by hard stool or her straining to poop. If it's more blackish it could be an internal problem and should be checked out right away. Hope my extensive poop knowledge helps!

ouch! Anal tear. That can't be good. It's fresh blood, so that's better by the sounds of it. I've been forcing water on her all morning! Thanks, SamsMama

No problem, glad to be of service! Apparently it's not too bad..I guess it can be quite a small tear and still bleed a lot because of how thin the skin is in...the area. My son and I have celiac disease, so that's why I have so much poop know-how, lest you think I'm some weirdo!

poop know-how exactly what I'm after! Thanks. As you're here - do you think it's necessary to take her to the docs tomorrow even though she's due to go to nursery, and I'll have to take time off work? I'm happy to, but if they'll just say drink more water (or eat more fruit) then I could save the trouble!

Hmm...I probably would just to be on the safe side- I'd hate to advise you to do otherwise and then have it be something that needed attention. It's probably not serious though, so maybe you could just take her as soon as you could fit it in?

Yes you're prob right - shouldn't really ask you to make that decision on my behalf! I'll take her I think. Thanks for your help this morning. Sorry to hear you and your son have celiac disease, by the way. I don't know much about it but I gather it's unpleasant..

It's not too bad once you get used to it-totally managed by diet so much luckier to have than other diseases! Glad to help- it's 2:30 a.m. where I am and anything that will keep me awake is great. Hope it all works out.
