Nanny state.

Do you have older DC that you could sort of 'bend' the truth a little?

It was changed because some people were not reading the dosage instructions correctly and giving too much to under-2's.

Stoopid as you could now give too much to 2's and overs....

My advice?
buy it anyway, see if you can get hold of an old bottle with the old instructions on and keep it.

LackaDAISYcal · 09/02/2009 20:10

It changed about this time last year and was because it had become apparenat that some parents were overusing it and causing overdose in their LOs. Also parents were using it to sedate their children on a regular basis.

I bought some at Christmas last year when it still said 3months on the box and my DD was 6months old. I used it then and have used it since, judiciously and as the need arises.

I would go to a different shop and if questioned say you have an older DC who is at school.

afaik the dosage is the same as for calpol as paracetomol is the main ingredient.

nothing has changed ingredients-wise afaik.

i still have an "old" bottle and have given it to ds2 who is under 2

ConnorTraceptive · 09/02/2009 20:10

So annoying. I have got a litle bit left in old bottle so will write down dosages.

TBH ds2 is a big boy and probably weighs more than some 2 year olds!!

Will go to different chemist

Have to say it's sedative powers are much more limited on ds2 than they were on ds1. Probably because he's such a chunk!

i was sold it in october (at Heathrow Boots) after asking for calpol night for my 3.5 month old.

was a bit surprised, because i'd heard the guidance had changed.

haven't actually used it ...

SoupDragon · 12/02/2009 21:01

It is only suitable for under 2 years if the child's parents aren't thick. Except they can't say that on the bottle for PC reasons.

onehitwonder · 12/02/2009 21:02

Can someone put up what the old bottle says dosage wise. I forgot to keep any old packaging, bottle and have another baby due soon. We used it sparingly, but it was so good when DD was really unsettled with coughs/colds in the night. I really felt it gave her a more restful sleep and helped her recover quicker.

mileniwmffalcon · 12/02/2009 21:05

there was a recent thread (in last month or so) that had the doses on if you search the archive. i think the issue was that it's a combined medicine i.e. contains paracetamol and antihistamine and people were unwittingly doubling up by using e.g. calpol as well.

I only found this out the yesterday when I went to buy a new bottle.

I have a DS 3yrs and a DD 11 mths and they have a cold I had been giving it to both of them as the old bottle I was using said....

3 months to under 1 year, half to one 5ml spoonful 3-4 times a day.

so I thought it was ok, until I got to the chemist and tried to buy the new bottle. When the chemist asked me how old my DC's are I told him there ages and that I'd been giving it to my 11 month old he told me not to give her anymore.

Cathpot · 12/02/2009 21:16

Pharmacist told me thatproblems had arisen with people mixing it with other cold remedies including some cough mixtures. He said there was no problem with it if it was given on its own at doses as suggested (as dragonfly says).

Then we both pretended it was for my 4 year old and he sold me some.
