SLAPCHEEK - can I send dd to school??

Hi

My dd has what looks like slapcheek, she says a friend had it and she was playing with the friend. It seems to be contagious before the rash comes out, can I send her to school???

dd2 had it recently and gp said to keep her off til the rash started to subside as it is dangerous to pregnant women

Not sure! I think it can be dangerous for women in the early stages of pregnancy and you wouldn't necessarily know whether any of the teachers at your dd's school are pregnant or not.

yes , please keep her in,it may be harmless if she passes it to another child but if they are in contact with a pregnant woman it could be very dangerous

I am assuming that the child she caught it from was at school while she had it, when I asked dd what was wrong with her cheek she said "oh no I must have that cheek virus that xxxx had and I was playing with her", bless she is only 5.

Is it only dangerous to pg women?? We were visiting a new born baby last week and I beleive dd would have been contagious (obv didnt know that then).

If she has the rash you are fine to send her to school.

NHS advice here

It is only in the lead up to the rash that she can infect others, so she is fine now you know she has it, if you see what I mean.

However, it might be good to get your GP to confirm that it is slapped cheek before sending her in.

My son had this once. The GP told me that by the time the rash appears, the infectious period is over.

So yes you can send her to school but expect the school to send her home again (my son's school did).

I think I will phone the school in the morning and see what they say. I would assume if dd's friend had it then it must be in the school already. Surely if the virus is contagious before the rash comes out then the virus is already in the school??

Conflicting advice on here and on the pc. Think I will just phone the school.

My ds wasn't allowed back into school until the rash had subsided on the directive of headmaster.
The gp advised me to contact school maybe worth doing the same saves you taking her and then having to go back.

There is no exclusion period for slapped cheek, as the rash is a sign that you are no longer infectious.

Thanks, it seems to be general advice on the internet that they can go back to school but you know what schools are like with their pricedures etc?
